Newport, Sept. 11. County Sur
veyor Wygant of Lincoln county has
Just been brought to his homo in
this city to recover from a terrible
crushing experience he had in tho
mountains near tho head of Salmon
river. Ho was literally crushed Into
tho ground on tho mountain Bide by
a 30-foot log, over three feet in di
ameter, and estimated to weigh
8000 pounds, that got started and
rolled over him. He was running
lines on a government contract In
townBhlp six-nine, wost of Shorldnti,
on the Bldo of Saddelback mountain,
over 2900 foot above the sea level
whon tho accident happened. Mr.
Wygant is one of tho most experi
enced timber and mountain men on
tho const. Besides being county sur
veyor ho has been city engineer of
Newport, and has executed many
government contracts. Ho was put
on a star route case recently, correct
ing lines of a survey of four years
ago, that has been under dlsputo
over since, and which tho govern
ment has several elmes rofused to
nccopt nnd pay for. In coming down
tho side of tho mountain with his
crow ho was working with tho tran
sit, and had Just climbed ovor tho

commission, which will ultlmatoly
affoct all tho coal carrying roads of
tho country, tho Hocking Valley
and Wheeling & Lnko Erie roads
must hereafter mako a Just propor
tionate distribution of coal cars
ampng shippers, including tho prl
vato cars and tho foreign fuel cars
which aro at tho disposition of such
owners lessees or coal companies.
In other words, all cars aro to bo
counted in tho distribution. Tho
order becomes effective after tomor
row. This is an important victory
for the independent coal companies
over mining concerns which aro
owned, in part or 'entirely, by the
railroads.

to a mold of mud and wntor, and
thoro was not tho thickness of a
hand of his body above tho ground
after tho log had passed ovor him.
This mold of soft earth that ho was
mashed into probably saved his life,
Ho was unconscious in this supor
flclnl grave for two and a half hours
boforo ho could bo removed by his
friends, who the.n mado a stretcher
and carried him to tho nearest house
sovoral miles away. A medical ex
amination showed that ono of his
hip bones was driven out of tho
socket, vbut no bones woro broken.
The muscles on tho back of his
thighs were torn looso and tlu
whole, upper part of his body
bruised. Ho had to bo packed by
men, and from Salmon rlvor, was
two days being brought to Newport.
Whon first found ho had been so
badly crushed that tho blood rushed I
out of his eyes, ears and nose. It
was not expected that ho would live,
but ho Is recovering nicely and ex
pects soon to resume his labors.
