Rankin of Portland boenmo tho possessor of nearly 4000 acres of tho best timber land In Benton coun ty. This Is n deal of considerable Importance as Mr. Rankin 1a consid ered tho timber king of woBtcrn Ore gon and as Benton county contains some of tho best timber in tho CouBt range, his recent purchases make him nn Important porsonngo In thld neighborhood and our people may hopo for some early devolopmentn along this lino. Ho now owns nearly 30,000 acres In this county alone and tho now railroad will Incrcaso Its valuo and put It in easy access of market, as much of this virgin forest will bo penetrated by tho new road. It woud take Boveral years for saw mills to manufacture all this timber into lumber, but whon once cleared off tho land'would be nlmost as valu- ablo for agricultural and grazing purposes as It Is now for timber, as tho soil is rich and very productive.
