John Detka, of St. Paul, Minn., Met
Death Under Car Wheels Last
Night.
A young man, who gave his namo
as John Detka. of South St. Paul,
Minnesota, mot a tragic death last
night by falling off the overland
train In tho Salem-yards, and being
mangled beneath the wheels. Ho was
taken to the Salem hospital, but died
In a few minutes after reaching
there.
Ho was stealing a rldo on tho
steps of a Pullman, and fell off be
tween Court and State streets, as
tho train was approaching the Salem
station. A man, who says his namo
is George West, was accompanying
him, and was on tho steps of the
next sloeper. Ho was kept in tho cus
tody of Sheriff Culver last night, for
his possible use as a witness. Ho
says ho never mot Detka until ttfpy
mot last evening at Oregon City, and
really knows nothing of tho dead
man's history. Ho gave his namo as
stated, nnd last night on the way to
the hospital told tho same thing to
Shorlff Culver.
Tho man on tho way to tho hospi
tal said something indistinctly that
his partner Interpreted to mean that
the colored porter on tho Pullman
had kicked him off tho train, but he
wns not Biiro of it, Tho shorlff did
not so understand It. West says that
when the depot wns reached the por
ter camo and told him that hl3 part
ner had fallen from tho train. West
did not see him fall.
Detka's skull was fractured and
Ills right arm badly mangled.
A portion of a letter was found on
Ills person, presumably written by a
sister, and tho Bcapular mentioned
In tho letter was also on his person.
Tho fragment of tho letter was as
follews:

tion of the "Maid and tho Mummy"
at the opera house last night be
lieving they would hear a musical
comedy like Carlo's "Tho Tender
foot' 'or "Tho Burgomaster" may
have been somewhat disappointed.
The "Maid and tho Mummy" wns
only burlesque, but It was good bur-

witty and refreshing; the costumes
were neat, new, tnsty, pretty and nr

ented, nnd tho comedians were fully
up tho standard.
Tho mummy was never absent.
That important rolo was filled by
Fred Warren, and so tightly did the
whole ensemble stick to Warren that
tno perrormanco may bo tormed a
ono-man show.
Mr. Warren Is exceedingly clover,
and kept his audience In a roar of
laughter. Tho "maid" .was not in
tho limelight to tho samo degreo tho
"mummy" wns.
On tho whole, the musical num
bers were good. "Oh, Geo; Its Great
to Bo Crazy," "I'm so Dizzy" nnd
others made big hits with the Salem
audience.
Tho house was well filled.
