Then, of course, the august father and the rest of the roynl family will make the best of a bad job. Jumps Overboard to See King. An echo of Cowes week comes in a gossipy little paragraph anent a fair young American, unnamed,-who took a queer chance of coming Into Uie presence bf their majesties of England and Spain. It is said that this slrl was aboard an American yacht at the great yacht-racing meet ing. On board tho Britannia were gathqred all tho royalties. Tho boat In which they had boarded the Bri tannia wns till alongside. The American yacrit was passing the royal yacht at a high speed, when this young woman fell or jumped Into tho water. There were, of course, Instantly many shouts. Tho American yacht shot past the Bri tannia, but stopped her engines and lowered a boat. But tho Britannia's gig, of course, Immediately rowed up and picked up tho girl, who wns practically exhausted and in a pre carious condition, indeed. She was lifted into 'the boat, but, alas for her hopes! tho king ordered his men to take her not on board the royal yacht, as she no doubt expected, but off to her own yacht, which by this time had iieon ablo to' stop hor way and begin to return. There were many yachts nt Cowes, tho biggest being the Utowana of the Ahmours, which now goes into the hands of the Gorman emperor. King Edward, presumably because ho had tho king and queen of Spain to en tertnln, did not ask many of tho others present on board his yachts. MURDERER ONFINEB IN JAIL Sheriff Returned With Four Bad Men From St.Paul Hop Fields The slayers of .Marshal Krochter, of St. Paul, are confined in tho coun ty jail. Tho chief of these, Fred Eastman, the man who fired tho fa tal shot, is himself in danger of death, having been shot through tho body, nnd a bullet lies near his heart. James R. Seeley, Warren Eastman and William R. Murphy aro also in jail, and will havo to answer to a jury for the life of tho marshal of St. Paul. Sheriff Culver and Deputy Mlnto returned last night from tho north end of tho county with these men. Coroner Clough went to tho scene of ELM hII i the tragedy and held an Inquest. He nlso returned, nnd wns in tho ambu lance that brought In Bastman, who seems to bo ift the point of dentil. Seeley Is from Portland, nnd Is a prize fighter, one of the gentry which scorns to do a day's honest work, but who condescended to nttond tho hop gathering "whero thero is plen ty of booze, and whero you will have a hell of a time," just for tho'social pleasure there was In it. Fred Bast man and Warren Kastman aro said to bo fishermen from Astoria, and Mur phy is tho proprietor of tho St. Pnul gin mill. It seemB that -Seeley and Eastman picked a row with an old man named Eastman, nnd finally, In Murphy's saloon, assaulted him brutally. May or Wray witnessed tho nssault, and instructed the marshal to quell tho disturbance. Krechter deputized Alfred Lambert and Nnrclssus Man agro to assist him, and went In aftei the bad men. The marshal attempted to arrest Seeley, when Murphy, tho saloon man, chimed In and said: 'I'll be dammed if you take any ono from this place." Seeley said: "If you say so, bo can't," and jumped over tho bar and went to fighting Indiscriminately. Lambert tried to arrest Eastman, who dared tho deputy to shoot. Lam bert did shoot, hut was knocked down by a blow on the head. Ho missed his man. In tho meantime Bastman, who seemed to stand In with tho saloon man, ran Into a rear room and got a revolver and stepped through tho door and began firing at Lambert. Krechter at that time enmo from tho side room and shot Bastman In tho back. Bastman turned and fired two shots at tho marshal. Tho first ono missed, but tho second wont through his heart, and the marshal dropped dead. After tho affair was over. Mayor Wray caused all the strangers to bo locked up, except Eastman and See ley, who escaped and took refugo In an old bulldlne oa a hop ranch a half mile above St. Paul, whero they were later arrested. Murphy, the proprietor of tho sa loon was also arrested later on. As sooa m tave otlK was over ' tho sheriff wns notified by telephone, nnd the wounded men were attended by Dr. Dandnigue. On the arrival ot Coroner Clough yesterday au inquest wns held over the body of the marshal by a Jury composed of H. M. Conner, A. Ra ney, H. Waltz, A. Pfeiffer, S. Morten nnd Peter Lucier. The verdict shows that Bastman killed tho marshal nnd that Eastman, Seeley and Murphy were implicated in tho murder. BaBtmnn fired threo shots and Krech ter and Lambert fired six each. Vinton Baker, tho 12 year old son of D. S. Baker of Eugene, was found dead Tuesday evening nbout C o'clock In the field on his father's farm, evidently the victim of n run away team. -He had been driving a harrow, and had been dragged for a long distnnce, tho harrow cutting him in the right shoulder severing several large arteries and otherwise injuries him, from which ho had bled to death. Tho little city of Independence is. having troubles of its own in its po lice circles Just now. Chester Beardsley, of Arlington, was kicked by a horse Sunday., Ills jaw was broken and ho wns uncon scious for several hours.
