The board has been at work Industriously for three days, nnd will remain in session during this week. It wll probably adjourn Saturday unless business continues good; in which enso petitions will be heard next week. So far the board has done but little final work. All petitions for tho re adjustment of assessed values have been heard, nnd tho fullest investi gations hnve been made In each ense. Elaborate notes nre taken, but few final opinions have been made. In many cases tho assessor's valua tions will be reduced and in other In stances they will bo Increased. Charles Cniilklns Rescued His Wife and Another Lady From Watery Grave. Mrs. Charles Caulklns nnd Miss Velma Glover came very near being drowned in the Willamette river yes terday afternoon about 5 o'clock, about half way between the "Ma ples" and the steel bridge. The fortu nnte circumstance that Mr. Caulkins hnppened to be near by and saw the ladles in time to jump into a gasoline launch nnd come to their rescue, was their only chance from drowning, ns neither of them can swim and Hhe water at thnt point Is deep and the current swift. The two young women were In' a I smnll row boat, which kept dipping water unitl it sank out of sight. Mr. Caulklns was standing on the bank nnd saw the ladies In trouble and had already started after them when the boat sank. He was only a min ute or two getting to the spot, but before he arrived Mrs. Caulklns had struck bottom, appeared on the sur face, and had started back to explore the bed of theriver. Miss Glover was Just making her first voynge to the surface of the water. Cniilklim threw Miss Glover Into tho boat with one hand, held Mrs. Caulklns nbovo wnter with the other, nnd by extraor dinary efforts managed to get them both nshore safely. Mrs. Caulklns said that the popular belief that the whole pnst life of a drowning person nppears before one like n panorama is now nn exploded myth; thnt while under the billows, sho had no thought of tho past, but simply wanted to get out. Miss Glover said she worried over the trouble she would have in drying her hair.
