It has been given out quietly that Professor Mahafllo resigned his posi tion Jn this city In order that he might tnko a moro lucrative job In 'the Puget Sound town. Professor Mahafllo safd this morning as he was leaving, that such was not tho ense. He admitted that the now position was a better one than tho Salem Job; but ho said that ho was re-electe'd to tho chair of chemistry last June nftor holding the place for two terms nnd that he expected to stay, and was satisfied with the position and work. Some time ago, however, ho received n lottor from President Coleman of tho Wlllametto University, snvlnp that his services wore no longer re quired In tho school.
