Ail our -aluabielg we willj - ..a SalLEM, OREO-NT, SATURDAY, JULY THE OLD SASSAFRAS CANAL Built in 182 9 Connecting Del- awre and Chesepeake Bays to Be Reopened In asking for an appropriation of $10,000 for the expenses of a com mission to rcsu vey nu estimate the cost of enlarging tho old "Sassafras" canal connecting tho Delaware and Chesapeake bays, Congressman Bur ton, of Delaware', gives some interest ing statistic on this old canal, one of tho old artificial waterways in tho United States. It Is proposed by tho Burton bill for confess to purchase this canal for tho government anil enlarge it to admit tho largest vessels afloat. Mr. Burton gives the following in teiostlng history of tho canal: Tho first survey for a canal to con nect tho waters of the Delnwwe bay with thoo of the Chesapeake, was made by August Herman in tho year 1070, for Lord Baltimore and another as made by Josluta Qilplu in the j ear 1S04. The survey was probably mado after the state of Maryland granted' a char ter to tho Chesapcako & Dolnwaro Ca nal com any in tho year 1791). Whether the routo of the present canal was tho only one surveyed by the early work or not 1 am unablo to ay, but sinco thnt day a number of other mutes have been surveyed by tho government looking to tho con struction of a waterway between tho two bajs as a pint of a system of coast defense. These wero known respectively as the "Sassafras," the "Chaptunlo river" nnd tho "South east" route, which contemplate n con struction by way of tho waters of the Brondkiln, on the Delaware bay near tho now harbor of refuge, with those of tho Nauticoko river, on the Mary land or Chesapeake. It will bo soon thnt the United States government has from its begin Jng seen and from tlmo to timo talk ed of and surveyed and examined into this matter, becnuso, whenever the possibility of war occurred, tho urgent necessity for such a connection became npparent. Spenking from memory, I think it was President Madison who recommended in ono of his messages to congress that such a waterway bo const'uetod. Tn all probability ho was led to see the need of such a thing by the war of IS 12. Tho work of construction of tho piesent Chesapcako & Delaware, canal wab begun on tha 15th day of April 1824, under the direction of Silas E. "Weir, whoso sorvices terminated with his life on tho 11th day of May ISS. Ho was succeeded by Itober M. Lewis under whose supervision tho work was completed. Tho water was turned into tho ca nal on tho 4th day of July, 1320. Tho opening up of tho national euterprlso was tho occasion of a grand celebra tion on tho 17th of October in tho same year. Tho length of tho canal is 13 miles. Width at water lino, 00 feet. Depth of wator, 10 feet. Width at. bottom, 30 feet. Length of locks, 100 feet. Width of locks, 22 feet.
