Tho Watervlllo Times: Continued dullness has to bo reported in tho hop market, both locally and in tho primal sources, as business is at a standstill with brewers, and dealers not showing any Interest. Wo hear of no important transactions on tho local markot, up- stato or on tho Pacific eoaat. Holders of stock are nominally firm, in their views, but it is probailo somo slight concessions would bo made, should any buyoTs appear. Crop news continues very good with conditions unchanged. Good growing weather has been report ed an this stato and tho crop Is coming along as well as can b expected. No change in prospects on tho Pacific coast; weather continues favorable and everything promises a largo yield unless something unforseon develops latcn on. There is somo talk of vermin from -tho Continental yards, but It is not though to bo serious. English advices are fav orable, although tho crop Is still back ward. Hop Conditions in England. Kontish Observer,May 31: Under tho influence of tho wnnm sunnv weather of tho past few days, tho young bino has made good progress and now pre sents a fresh healthy appearance. Tho recitnt rains were very beneficial, and tho attack of flea has subsided in most grounds. Prospects for this early per iod aro" generally fair but the bino has much to do yet to roach its average growth for the beginning of June. Wei shall begin our usual plantation reports next week. An unusual sight is to bo witnessed at West Farleight on tho main ronil from Maldstono to Paddock Wood. Owing to tho bankruptcy of Mr. Li onel Fletcher, who was n largo hop grower In tho district, tho hop poles, wiro work andi under ground pipes, tanks, etc., for washing tho hops on a largo acreage have been sold for tho benefit of tho creditors nnd taken nway, while tho hops on tho landr which, it is stated, lias been put up to auction by tho mortgagees and remains -unsold, aro running wild all over the ground, and tho crop for this year, therefore, is entirely lost. Supplies of really cholco hops aro practically exhausted, and tho llttlo trade doing is confined to medium qual ities, which aro saleable from 2 pounds 5 shillings to 3 pounds. Yearlings make about 2 pounds 5 shillings, California hops lire quoted here ut from 3 pouni's 10 shillings to 4 pounds, tho "corner" brought off at San Francisco having stiffened rntro on this side. Messrs. W. H. and II. LeMay, Lon don, S. E., repert: During tho past week thero has been a very fair do mand for English hops, tho low rjfices ruling tempting those who havo not stocked up, to do so. Messrs. Manger and Henley, London, 8. E., repert: Tho demand con tinues foi good, useful, sound hops, which aro scarco and difficult to meet with. Prices remain firm with n do- cideil hardening tendency. Worcester Hop Report. Business roiimiu in u very quiet con dition and values show no quptable al teration, but consumers wllK.seldom op- oito unless ioiiui conoession is mnuo. Tho heavy rains havo caused tho young bine to make bettor progress and a continuance of the present warm weath er will soon unable arrears of growth to bo mud up. Fly has appeared. .1. 11 Meredith & Co. Hops in California. TALK The Eugene Register of Wednesday says: In the absence of Mayor Wilklns Councilman Henderson, presided at tho postponed meeting of the council last evening. There wero present Calkins, McC-ady, Spencer, Garrett. No busi ness was transacted with tho excoptioa of reading of a railroad ordinance, ask ing for a franchise on tho streots of Eugene. This was introduced formally Into tho council by Alderman Calkins on behalf of EmcTy C. Dyo, his associ ates and assigns. Mr. Dyo .rend tho instrument for the benefit of tho coun cil and! herewith are some of tho im portant provisiens: Tho road will connect with nn In tcrurban electric roa'd terminating in Portland; a bond of $2000 will bo post ed to assure good faith, half of it to bo forfeited in case construction does not oommeneo before tho expiration of a six months' limit; tho company will pay tho city one and one-half per cent of its gross earnings in tho city; con fltructiou to begin within; six months nnd completion madei within eighteen months; tlmo to Portland, two and a half hours. Tlicso aro the salient features of tho ordinance and the council seemed fav orably Impressed with the same, as a whole. It provides further, for an op portunity for the cdty to purchase pow er rights from the company. at somo points on tho McKcnzlo rtviv, n such time as may bo agreed upon. This new interest In the franchlso situation promise to enliven tho mat tor while the M. P. A. Is hustling their new ordinance, together nnd beforo tho the thing Is settled thero will likely bo enough vxcltoment over rnlVwnds to stretch all tho way down tho valley. Rumor has it that Mr. Black will resurrect his franchlso fronv cold stor age ami after trimming off tho decayed edges, will present It to the city coun cil again, practically as good as now. With all these beforo tho council and its advisors, thero should bo mnterlal sufficient to hold tho attention of most of our citizens for tno next four or fivo I months. Tho more franchises tho bet ter, say tho people of Eugene, and out of tho geuernl scnunblo for tho right, something satisfactory to tho moct fas tidious should develop. Mr. Dyo is tho young man who whs In this vicinity last weok and located water right up and dowu the raging McKenzio right and left and ho talks llko a promoter. Thereforo his fran chise must bo ro 'cgarded as at least formidable, slneo ho seems to bo In possession of tho leading inducements so far Mibuillttod to tho city fathers.
