To those few in the outer world who ever heard of them at all they are mostly known as Moquis this through the publicity gained by their annual snako dance. But "Moqui" or "Mo ld" is a misnomer. Hopi is how they would have us know them because it is right, and because it means some thing to them and is justly symbolic of their racial characteristic!. Peace ful gentlo is its significance and the worst word they know to apply to an offender is' ka-hopi the negative of Hopi or pas-ka-hopi, the superlative of this; and any one as bad as this is hopeless. Moki in their language means dead, and the accepted theory of its first application' to hem as a tribal name is that the Navajo, their long time enemy, in a spirit of dirislon so called them on account of their dis taste for warfare, and love of a quiet- staV-at-home life. 'According to the Navajo code they were "dead ones." Prom the Navajo, whoso country en tirely surrounds the Hopi, the early traders and settlers acquired the word Moki before ever seeing tho Hopi; and from the trader it easily passed without Question to the government representatives, so it now stands as tho official appellation in the Indian department. But ask a Hopi is he is a Moqui his quick resentment wm be convincing enough. From "Hopi Indians: Gentle Folk," in The Crafts man for June. WEAK KIDNEYS MAKE WEAK BODIES Kidney Diseases Cause Half the Com mon Aches and His of Salem People. As one woak link weakens a chain, so woak kidneys weaken tho whole body and hasten tho final breaking down. Overwork, strains, colds and other causes injure tho kidneys, and when th'i-ir activity is lessoned the whole body suffors from tho excess of uric poison circulated in tho blood. Aches nnd paiiw and languor and urinary ills come, and there Is an ever increasing tendency towards diabetes and fatal Bright 's ' disease. There is no real help for the sufferer except kidnoy help. Doan's Kidney Pills act directly on tho kidneys and euro every kidnoy ill. Salem cures aro tho proof. William Stansoll, of 250 Cottago St, , Salem, Ore., says: "For fivo or six years kidnoy complaint and backache bothered me. Crawford, who is tho Repub lican cnndidtito for ra election to the ouieo of attorney general, had his baptism In tho firo of Western lifo in Marehtield. Ho came hero as a young man in 18S0, and formed a partner ship with G. Webstor in tho practice of law. Ho was a hard workor and) a closo student, -and soon took a lead ing position among the Coos county attornoys, whllo his genial good fellow ship mado him a host of friends and. bis integrity aud good habits won him universal respect. After about ten years in Mnrshfield, he removed to Roseburg, when appointed to a post tion in tho laud oftice. In the larger field thus afforded ho has steadily forg ed ahead, ami there is no question as to his being ono of tho best attornoys in tho state. He- has served oue term in tho office to which he again aspires, and if thero has been any criticism worth tho name it has not come to the attention of tho Coast Mai), Iu fact ho has filled tho oflico with marked abil ity, and is certainly entitled to re electiou. Mr. Crawford has always been a staunch Republican, and is en titled to any honors that tho Repub lican party can shower upon him. As a matter of fuc"t, thero is no possible doubt of his election, but tho point the Mall would like to make is, that Coos county can do no more graceful thing than to giro him tho largest pojjibla wnjorlty.--Ooast ValL DAILT OAimb JOOTKAA Suppose your bair should all leave you! There is as much important and en tertaining reading in McClure's for Juno as one would expect to find in a volume, let alone a single number of a magazine. Tho leading story' is "Buried Treasure," by Stewart Ed ward White, which combines romance and reality most suggestively and which goes with a swing reminiscent of Stevenson. Mr. Kay Stannard Baker contributes the sixth of his series "The Railroads on Trial," telling the as tonishing story of how Danville, Vir ginia, has wavered between prosperity and ruin because of its strugglo with the Southern Hallway. Mr. Burton J. Hendrick continues the story of life insurance with a Tcsume of the work of Elizur Wright, the pioneer, who made tho failure of a lifo insurance company a mathematical impossibility, and who gave the Equitable, tho New York and tho Mutual, the strength to withstand tho awful test of tho last 12 months. "Yellow Fever: A Problem Solved," by Samuel Hopkins Adams, is a most engrossing story of last sum mer's Battle of New Orleans. Mr. Adams tells of the discovery of th mosquito theory and how by itsVork ing out last year this country has prob ably been saved from another great epidemic of yellow fever. Carl Schurz continues his "Reminiscences of a Long Life," with an account of Paris on tho eve of tho Second Empire. The second installment of the Kipling sc ries is oven more engrossing than the first. 'On tho Great "Wall" is the story of how a British-born Roman took a hopeless task from his emperor and sacrificed his youth to its perform ance. Other fiction in this remarkable number is "Uncle, Sammio," a great Decoration Day story, by Charles Flem ing Embreo; "Tho Strange Adventure of Lulu," by Robert McDonald, and "Tho Sowing Machine Story," by AT SALEM One Day Only Friday Jane J Performances 2:30 and 8 P. They may be put in tablets or in liquid, the result is just the same. Tho object is to create artificial diges tion, but this does not make a cure. Stop taking the pepsin, etc., and you havo your dyspepsia or indigestion back again. People uso cocaine or opium for norvous troubles and sick headache. It does not cure. Stop taking the drugs and "the pain and distress return. The only Common Sense Method is to drive out of the svdlcm tho causo of dyspepsia and sick headache by cleansing the stom ach and bowels, at tho same time usinc a medicine that will act on the aver. This forces through the glands of the etomach the digesthjo fluid that nature intended. In this way you cure dyspepsia.
