He considers the place of the lodge in the social fabric of the country, its hu mor and pathos, and its potent place In the imagination of the average American. Soil already saturated with exces sive rainfall of winter has received further accessions of .moisture over wide areas in the form of rain, snow, and hail. Spring sowings have been serioosly retarded in some countries and are now much in arrears. Autumn-sown cereals, however, are generally reported fair to excellent in condition, and the prospects for these important crops seem thus far to show few serious effects from con ditions which theoretically would be deemed harmful. The season has opened under less satisfactory auspices than usual, and a prodigal period of favorable weather is necessary to over come delays already incurred.
