discretion and have done no barm,
while it is believed that the militia
have done much useless shoot inc. These
j home guards do not know how to use
discretion, aad carry out orders too
hastily, it -s said they have shot peo

rerulana would have overlooked.
The dynamiting of buildings to stop
toe fire and cWr away the debris is
all done seder the direction of the reg
ular soldiers. This work has caused
oasiderable additional damage. For
lastasce, the postofHee buildinzs and
the mint, which were intact, have had
all the windows shattered' out of them.
The-e buildings are heavilr jruarded
to protect the immense wealth within
them.
Another of the heartrending scenes
was witnessed ia the residence portion,
as families by the- hundreds were flee
ing from the flames, and many left
their bomes with their goods, and after
going a few blocks put them down.
Then they would be driven further
and further, from block to block, and
street to street, thus fleeing with their
alL They would become exhausted and
loe everything. Many of these later
found their own homes unburned, but
it was too late to recover their goods
Many of these people would fall asleep
from sheer exhaustion, with the flam
creeping upon them. Thev would man

people is something terrible. The vast

annihilated, and every explosion from
dynamite renews their fears. When the
slight tremor waa felt last "Wednesday
morning thousands thought the end
