To tho oastorn pcoplo who are com ing hero with small capital and a largo family, I could not suggest a business that thoy could go into at onco thnt would bo as romunorativo as this. I would purcliaso a small tract of land, eay 5 or 10 acres and in solooting land sui tablo for growing chorrles I would prefer the red clay hill land, or well drained bottom land lying closo to the hills. This land can bo bought at vary ing prices from $30 to $100 an acre, owing to looation, ote. And I would add furthor that no hotter location can be found in tho stato for growing this fruit than tho Marion county hills as thoy nro especially adapted for fruit growing. Now in starting an orchard of this kind ono should not make the mistako of sotting their treos too close Thoy should not bo closer than 30 foet apart and then for tho first fow years while your treos aro making their growth plant botwoen them rows of etrawborrles or raspberries which will bring in a good profit tho second year paying your oxpensos until tho cherries como into bearing. And while you are cultivating your small fruit you will bo giving your young chorrles the propor working they should have to mako a good strong growth whilo young. One acre of Royal Anne cher ries at 10 years old proporly cared for will net $200 and tho returns increase as the trees grow older. I havo ob served the frost is about tho only thing that prevents us from getting a full crop each year, and one can prevent tho frost from doing any harm at a vory small expense of having piles of damp straw placed at equal distances about tho orchard and then on nights that there are indications of frost, get up by 4 o'clock nnd flro your straw. This method if proporly carried out will sccuro you against frost and as thoro aro practicnlly only throo or four nights in tho spring thnt wo havo frosts, that aro daugorous.
