Will you plcaso explain tho way it wns dono In tho Intorcst of fair piny and common justico. ANOTHER MOTHER. Tho lady should know that qll &v lorn tonchors woro askod to sond in applications to bo ro-omploycd nnd did so nbout a month ago. Tho bonrd hold a mooting Saturday ovcnlng, May 20,-nnd all membors wcro present in cluding City Superintendent Travor. At this meeting tho minutes do not show thnt any nction on electing tonch ors wns taken, nor wns any ono oloct cd. Thoro was a secret mooting of tho board, a kind of prlvnto caucus at which tho different teachers wcro dlscussod but not for publication nnd tho public is not supposod to know what took plaeo at that meeting. It is not known whethor tho city superin tendent was prcsont, and it is not sup posod thnt ho was present. Tho board ndjournod to Tuesday, May 23, whon they mot at 7:30 and elected teachers, and tho resignations of Misses Bellin ger, Smith, Myors, Hazzard nnd Judd woro rend and nccoptod. Othors woro olectod in their places, ns their friends on tho board supposod that thoy woro going to tako plnccs clsowhoro, and did not know tholr resignations had boon procured. All that can bo lenrnod nbout these- resignations is from tho tonchors thoniBolves, who say that about 10 o'clock Tuesday, tho day set for electing tcachors, thoy woro sorvod with a written notlco from tho dork of tho board, James 0.- Goodalo, at their rooms whoro thoy woro touching, asking thnt thoy submit their resig nations by not later than 7:30 that ovonlng, by ordor of tho board. No reason or explanation was offorcd and all thoy could do was to send in thoir written roplgnntlons. Tho nction of tho bonrd, if thoro was any action, was taken Saturday night and thoy wore not notiflod until Tuesday nnd not having tirao to mnko nny showing wont out by unanimous voto of oven thoso who would linvo voted to rotaln thorn if they had boon given a chanco to voto on thorn. As thoro is much local interest in this matter, nnd as It is contrary to all past practices of tho school board, hero is tho official minutes taken from tho rocords of tho school board as mado by tho clerk: "Tho resignations of Graco Bellinger, Bosslo Smith, Maud Moyors, Edith Hazard, and Carolino Judd wero read and on motion nccoptod.' Tho nbovo is all that can bo loarncd about tho matter. Thoro is no criti cism of tho porsons who woro put in the placos of those tcachors. Tho crit icism that comes to the newspapers is tho way tho resignations wero procured. All tho toachors removed are ladlos who stand high in tho toaehing profes sion, and against most of thorn thero had been little or no complaint. Their scholarship and conduct is not ques tioned and to many parents it seems unnecessary changes wero mado in an arbitrary manner and without giving theso ladles a fair opportunity. So mo of the board laugh and say all they lacked was votes onough to olect them, nnd other mombers refuse to discuss the subject. In the moantlmo it is said a number of other toachors will resign. For a number of yoars in tho man agement of Salem schools thoro have been no removals unloss complaints wero mado by patrons of tho schools. It is claimod that the standards es tablished under City Superintendent Traver mado theso changes noccssary, but it does not appear that bo filed any objection to thoso toachors. In tho Lincoln school a few of tho ladies at ono timo had trouble with Principal Goode, but- as ho has been removed to the North school that could not bo as signed as a reason for removing threo teachers from that school practically at no ono's instance. Tho whole mat ter should bo investigated and tho real enuso of tho removals assigned on some one's authority. If that is not done, and if arbitrary power can re move anyone at nny timo there will bo few first-class teachers who will want positions in the Salem school?. REDUCED EXCURSION KATES.
