The Great Champion Works
Cover Sixty Acres of Ground
THE GREAT OHAMPION WORKS AT SPRINGFIELD, OHIO, ARE THE RESULT OP A GRADUAL GROWTH, DATING BACK OVER HALT A CENTURY, AND TO THE VERY
EARLIEST DAYS OP THE USE OF HARVESTING MACHINES. THE LOCATION OP THE FACTORY SITE DATES BACK EVEN TURTHER, TO THE FIRST SETTLEMENT OF
THIS PORTION OF THE COUNTRY. ONE OF THE EARLY HUNTERS, TRAPPERS AND INDIAN FIGHTERS, SIMON KENTON BY NAME, LOOATBD HERE AND BUILT A LOG
GRIST-MILL. TO THE GRINDING OF GRIST WERE AFTERWARDS ADDED A SAWMILL AND AN IMPLEMENT FACTORY, WHERE WERE MADE FIRST, SMALL FARMING
TOOLS; LATER, WAGONS AND LARGER FARMING IMPLEMENTS, AND IN 1849 WAS BEGUN THE MANUFACTURE OF REAPERS AND MOWRS.
THE PICTURE, MADE FROM A PHOTOGRAPH OF THESE GREAT WORKS, TAKEN FROM A TOWER ERECTED ESPECIALLY FOR THE PURPOSE, AND WHICH PICTURE MAY
BE SEEN AT THE OFFICE OF THE MITCHELL, LEWIS & STAVER CO'S WAREROOMS IN SALEM, GIVES SOME IDEA OF THEE SIZE; BUT ONLY BY A PERSONAL VISIT
WHEN ONE MAY SEE THE THOUSANDS OF BUSY MEN IN ALL DEPARTMENTS, CAN HE GAIN AN IDEA OF THE IMMENSITY OF THE INDUSTRY AND THE GREAT DE
MAND THAT EXISTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND IN OTHER COUNTRIES FOR THE CHAMPIONS. IN THESE SHOPS ONLY OHAMPION HARVESTING MACHINES ARE
MADE, AND THIS FACT WILL HELP TO GIVE SOME IDEA OF THE POPULARITY WHICH THEY HAVE ATTAINED. NO MACHINE LEAVES THE CHAMPION FACTORY UNTIL

Force Feed BINDER

First In importance among Champion harvesting maehinos Is Iho Champion Undor; no machino lias contributor
moro to tho popularity of tho Champion line, and nono ovor gavo bottor satisfaction. Tho Champion, with im
'&2'L:'W proved force feed elevator, power-giving eccontrio wheel on tho binding attachment, and othor special fonturoa,
it; "?fiJI;;!-,w has established a world-wido rcputattion for successfully handling crops undor tho most illlllcult co-muttons', ns won

Tho rear elovator end is closed, which affords substantial support to therollors of tho upper bolt, and keops It always perfectly true. Tho platform and elovntlng bojts nro very wldo, glv
ing tho machluo greator cnpaclty for long grain. Tho binding deck is steep, yet tho grain is elovntod no hlghcrthan on nny other bludor. Tho soat-bonrd is high tip, that loug grain may
not fall against it, but will striko tho canvass belt, and bo carriod up to tho olovator promptly.

Two"Good FeaturesyorShortjGrain
Whon you lower tho Champion binder on tho mastor wheel you move tho machino backward In relation to tho nxlo. This is as It should
be, becauso when cutting short grain tho machine is not only set low, but tho binding attachment is shifted forward to put tho bnnds in
the middle-' of tho bundles. Tho weight added behind thus balances the weight added in front, and uockwelght is provontcd. It is n sim
ple dovlce, but a valuable one, and patented, and is found only on the Champion.
Whon tho grain is -short or lodged or weedy at bottom, tho Champion reliof rake is a groat timo-taver. It prevents any accumulation of
trash or grain at tho junction of the finger bar with tho elovator, so n full swath can bo cut in nil conditions, and tho driver novor hns to
get off his soat to clean off this plnce,
Another advantago of tho Champion is that the platform canvas runs only one-half an inch back of tho knifo and nearly level with it.
Champion machines aro not only strong but light of draft; and, strange- as it may seem at first thought, arc light of draft lnrgoly bo
causa of their strength. If tho shaft and gears of a mnchino nro not held firmly at nil times, nro poorly supported and spring and bind
undor tho strain of a heavy load, or when the machino is at work on rough land, thero will bo an oxcobsIvo amount of friction, which cnusos henvy draft, and also rapid
ontirely avoided on tho hampions, by propor construction and proportion of tho parts, for on theso mnchinoi etrongth, light draft and durability nro novor sacrificed to
further equipped as a light draft machino with bull and roller bearings of an improved and substantial pattern.

THE WHEELS WIU. NOT LIFT FROM THE GROUND.
"Draw Cot" means drawing the finger bar of a mower along over the ground Instead of poshing
It. Drawing the finger fear entirely, not pushing It In the least, Is what gives the CHAMPION
the great cutting power for which it is celebrated. But this is only one oi the advantages of the
Champion. It has, besides, great strength and durability, is light in draft and easy to operate,
and excels in divices for preventing wear and for taking it up and renewing the life of the ma
chine when it does occur. The success of the Champion Draw Cut Mower has been phenom
enal; that the machine has deserved this' success, every purchaser will testify. The draw cut
mower is without doubt the most durable and powerful mower which has ever been made in the
Champion factories. Those, only, who are familiar with the old Champion rear cut mowers
made many years ago, which lasted the owners for a generation, can fully appreciate this state
ment. The Champion draw cut has the strength and cutting power of ihz old rear cut with all
the convenience of the modern front cut, and, besides, important adjustments not found on any
other mower.
CHAMPION HAY RAKES
THE CHAMPION lock-lever self- dump rake.
With this machine a boy may rake the heaviest
hay and bunch it with the rake as well as a man.
The foot lever for holding the teeth down may be
locked or not as desired; when locked no effort Is
required to hold the teeth down while gathering,
but simply the weight of the driver's foot will
keep them in position. It is a simple device. It
cannot get out of order.
