Whon questioned Kortes at first de-1 niod that ho was tho man, but, upon being tripped up in ono or two of his statements by tho officers, ho finally admitted that ho was Neihold, and that ho wont to Boone's Ferry on his oscape, whero ho worked all tho sum mer of 1804, then ho tried to mako tho sheriff bellovo that he went to Alaska, but this story was too "thin" for tho officers to boliovo for both have been in that country, and Whon thoy ques tioned' him nbout certain tliingH thoro ho wns unablo to give satisfactory ro plies. It is thought that ho has been in this vicinity most,of tho time, for it is an assured fact that ho was in Mt.
