A.rcmnrkublu fcaturo of tho public performance of "Everyman," which the Ben Groet company will act at tho Grand on Monday night, Dccc'mber 12, is tho largo number of enthusiastic en dorsements which it hna received, quite unsolicited, from clergy, scholars and others of nuthority who do not cus tomarily dovoto attontion to the stage. Edward Everott Halo wrote, in tho Christian Register: "Tho performance of a miraclo play by nn English company in our" different cities suggests a great doal to those interested in religious education. Tho performance is dignified, seiious and fits tho real purposo of thoso leaders of tho..peoplo who contrived such per formances in tho "dark ages.' Like tho'reccnt rovivnls of Bon Johnson, for instance, tho miraclo play of "Every man" might now bo studied to ad vantage by one who was only a virtu oso or dilettante, to learn how thoy did things five conturies ago. But I doubt if any person who attends with that poor virtuoso notion docs not como away with tho serious question whothcr tho play can not teach us all what is good for us, and whether it can not show us how wo can teach thoso who nro in our charge. Sever al times before has the young woman, who has just passed tbo ngo of 22,' tried to end her life, but has been thwarted in tbo attempt each time pre viously, but her failures before en abled her to make tho thing sure this time, and the swallowed tho greater portion of an ounce bottlo of carbolic acid. Mr. Cooper, who waited on her, when she camo into tho saloon, ,gave a Jour nal reporter tho following account of what happened in tho saloen: 'Sho camo into tho back room about 8:30 o'clock tho first time, nnd ordered sev eral drinks, and whilo I was waiting on her I noticed that sho seemed blue nnd downcast, and asked her what was tho matter. Sho told mo that sho didn't have anything to livo for, and that sho was. going to kill herself, but she has made threats of that kind so often that I supposed sho was joking, nnd bo gan to laugh at her. Sho staid in tho room about nn hour nnd a half, and when sho left sho again said sho had tho poison in her room, nnd was going up to writo a letter nnd tako tho ncid, and that by Sunday night sho would bo whero Charlio was. Sho appeared to bo So much in earnest that, although I still thought she was just joking, 1 thought that possibly sho might get to thinking nbout her troubles, and mako nnother nttompt, for it is a well-known fact that sho has tried to kill herself soveral times, and so I called Officers Lewis and Murphy, nnd told them nbout it, but thoy knew that sho had talked that most of tho time, nnd said (hero was no uso to pay any attention to it. "In about 30 minutes tho bell in the box rang, nnd I went in to go tho or der, and it wns McMcIlwnin ngain, who ordered a whiskey. I went out to get tho drink, nnd when I returned she threw n letter on tho floor, saying: 'I intend to kill myself in this room. That will toll it nil.' I picked up tho letter and stuck it in my pocket, and sat down on tho sofa nnd began to talk to her. asking her what she meant by taking about killing herself all of tho time, and sho roplied that sho wanted to go where Chnrlio wns, and that sho didn't hnvo anything left to live for, but by this time sho wns becoming so excited that I began to get scarcu, and started to search hqr, to sco if she roally did havo tho poison, when sho jerked away from me, ran to tho door nnd stopped out into tho passago way. I followed' her closely, and, ns I stepped out of tho room, sho turned ns though to re-enter, nnd with her back toward mo, snatched a vial from tho bosom of her dress, and drinking tho contents threw tho empty bottlo into the cornor of tho room before I could reach her, nnd then cast herself face downwards on tho sofa. I rnn to where sho was lying, not even then fully realizing what sho had done, but when I turned lier over her lips .showed where thoy had como in contact with tho acid, and I immediately forced tho whiskey down her throat, and sent for oil, but one drink was all that sho could take, and when more whiskey was .forced bo tween her teth ',e c''1 HOt swal" low " She took tho poison at 10:30 ocloe.k, and inside of 10 infinites Dr. Byrd had been found, nnd was in nttendnnce, but he was too lute, although he said if they had beeu ublo to force a pint of whiskey down her there would have been n 'slight chnuce of saving her. Tho doctor snld that sho lived longer, after taking the poison, than any ono ho hud over seen, as she took it nt 10:30 o'clock, unrt'dia.not die, until tho stroko of 12. Sho was unconscious af ter the first two or throo minutes, and did not seem to suffer nny pain what ever. The poison with which tho deed was committed was purchased at a local drug storo yesterday morning by n young man whose namo could not bo learned, who, nfter ho had bought it, made tho statemeut that It was for Mrs. Mcllwain. Tho deed was un doubtedly premoditated, for nt 2 o'clock in the afternoon she wont to Coroner Clough nnd told him that she was going to kill herself,, nnd wanted to bo burled beside her husband, and that she did not havo nny right to live, now thnt ho was gone. Sho undoubt edly was temporarily deranged on the subject of suicide, probably brought on by the sensational death of her hus band, who killed himsolf at her feet. Tho letter left by the deceased was addressed to her father and mother, Mr. and Mr Charles H. Cameron, and said that she was half-craied by re cent events.
