NEW YORK NEWS LETTER
NowYorlTj Nov. 21. Tho reorgani
zation of tho tobacco companies, which
is being carried on through the agency
ot tbo Morton Trust Company, is note
worthy an being of tho greatest opera
tions of tho kind, in tho amount of
clerical labor and bookkeeping in tho
history of American finance. The total
valuo of the securities to bo received
for conversion into stock and bonds of
the new American Tobacco Company is
363,568,000, while- tho amount of new
securities authorized will be- about
393,000,000. Tho latter, however, in
cludes $180,000,000 in common stock of
tho new company, of which only about
&0,2-,2,4C0 will be loft in the hands of
tho public.
Tho amount of work involved in .sig
natures, verifications, different forms of
bookkeeping and registration can prob-
nbly be appreciated only by trust com
pany officers who have been through
similar operations. Five different kinds
of certificates will be used in receipt
ing for tho old stocks and bonds sur
rendered before the new and final secur
ities nro ifcsucrt and delivered to tho
owners. Tho number of signatures alone
required to these documents, as well
ns tho work involved for tho higher ofll
cent of tho company and for the cleric
al force, is almost beyond computation.
Tho nearest parallels to this operation
hnvo porhaps been tho issue of tho
United Stntes Steel Company, and the
government loan of .$200,00,000 in tho 3
per cents in tho war with Spain, and:
both of thoso cases wcro comparatively
simple, becanso they were chiefly direct
issuoa of securities to bo dealt with,
instead ot tho conversion of several
classes of old securities into new and
differ on t classes
way to change the number of his house.
Tho trouble, he says, is that ho cannot
keep a servant. When they bring a girl
to the house shd looks up at the num
ber, and will not even enter. Now tho
street number bureau of tho .highways
departments has changed No. 13 to No.
11, and tbo occupant is happy.
The Rev. L. J. Evers, rector of St.
Andrew's church, of this city, has sailed
for Europe to present tho cardinal arch
bishop and the other archbishops, who
are soon to assemble in Paris, the reso
lutions passed by tho recent cucharistic
congress. Tho resolutions express sym
pathy with the religious bodies of the
Roman Catholic church in France, and
condemnation for tho attitude of tho
French government to ward Catholics.
A riovol scheme to make New i. ork a
fireproof city has been suggested to
Commissioner Oakley, of the water sup
ply department, by committees repre
senting tho Merchants' Association nnd
tho Retail Dry Goods Association. The
plan is to equip the windows on all
buildings throughout the city with a
wator shower, which is to bo connected
with pipes lending from the street. In
case any big building is threatened uy
fire, which starts in an adjoining build
ing these showers can be turned on-by
firemen, and thus make safe the en
dangered property.

'4,"Dtop n nickel in tho Blot, and see
your finish" is tho sign over a new
nlckol in-tho-slot machine. An oblong
wooden opening admits tho face, anil an
inenndoeeent light within reveals tho
spectator's features in a mirror. Watch
tho mirror closely, and one's imago
gradually fades and in its plnce a skull
npponrs, which slowly assumes startling
distinctness. The other night a woman
returning from the theatre dropped 'a
coin in the slot of one of the machines,
nnd a moment later fainted in tho nrms
of hor oscort.
Nicola Tosln hns joined the critics of
Now York's subway. Ho declares that
tho electric system, as installed, is one
jopresentnting tho state of tho art 10
years ago, and that vnlunblo improve
ments which nro of controlling import
ance hnvo- boon overlooked or discard
ed, air. Tosla further says: Tho
quickness of travol, tho safety of tho
public and of tho adjacent proporty,
were tho dominating requirements.
These have not been proporly mot. A
mistake was miido in not asking the
electric companies to furnish tho best,
instead of tho chonpost equipment."
Tho opinion is advanced that Mr.
Tftdn is making ono of his accustomed
"plays to tho gnllfriot' for advertis
ing purpose, and that ho will not be
nblo to support his "mischlavotis state
ment." Mrs. Florence K. Maybriek is at work
on n Iwuk dealing with her remarkable
life story, at the home of Brooklyn
friends. Slio wrltojt everything out her

n day on the book siiwo she has been

ultaneously in New York und London.
The recont death of Mrs. Annie Mor-
an, widow or iwaru juoran, me ma
rine painter, and herself an artist, re-
calls tho suit instituted by her to re
cover tier nusuanti's paintings, -ur.
Moran left a will directing his executor
to sell certain pictures, if $40,000 or
moro eould bo realized for them. If
this price wcro not procured, he was di
rected to givo them to tho New lork
public library. The $40,000 was not
forthcoming, and when tho pictures
wero turned over to the library Mrs.
Morton brought suit for them, alleging
that they had been given to her during
her husband 'i lifetime. She won her
suit. Tho pictures were recently ex
hibited nt tho Metropolitan Museum of
Art, and attracted much attention.

WHY DOES
A BABY CRY?
Because it is either hun
gry or in pain. Properly
nourished it will usually grow
up right and be comfortable
that's the principal thing
for a baby. If its food lacks
strength and nourishment
add Scott's Emulsion at feed
ing time. A few drops will
show surprising results. If a
baby is plump it is 'reason
ably safe. Scott's Emulsion
