Hauser, Pe op. flQKfl'Pl WTm SUNDAY CLOSING EFFECTED Salem Saloon Men Take Voluntary Action Close Saturday Niglit and .Sunday Until the Courts De cide What the Laws Are Salem saloon men have acted wisely fn deciding, in ndvanco of any mandate from the courts, to keep,, tho, Sunday laws of the state. . As tho result of n conference, nr ranged throuch tho Drcsldont of the fjommcrcinl Club, with tho retail liquor dealers nnd tho mayor of tho city, there will ho no open saloon an Sunday until tho courts decide whether Oregon has a Sundny law or not. Somo of tho best lawyers' say it is very doubtful whether thqro is n Sun day law or not in this stnto that np- plies to incorporated cities. But the decision, October 4th, that Sundny saloons nro unlnwful by tho lower court, nnd its nppcal to tho circuit court, which cannot be heard for sov oral months, has been voluntarily ac cepted in good faith by tho liquor deal ers of this city, nnd thov deserve credit for tnkiuj; this action. Tho rnso that has been appealed to Judgo Gnlloway's court will be heard in due time, and in tho meantime tho law will bo respected. Tho grounds for prosecution for Sundny violations nro thus removed, nnd it remains to bo seen how far tho Law Enforcement Lnguo will proceed with Sunday law en forcement In other lines. Tho saloon men say if the Law En forcement League is siucero in their devotion to the Sabbnth Inws of our stnto, nnd if they wore not engaged in snlouu prosecutions merely to carry tho local option election In November. Tho Law Enforcement Leaguers should now carry tho war Into Africa, and go nf tcr nil other lines of business carried on in spite of tho nllcgod Oregon Sun day lnw. Tho best nnd most conservntlvo busl noss men say tho saloon men havo dono right in this matter, nnd liavo cut the ground out from under tho feet of tho opposition At nil events there can be no more costs for prosecutions heaped on tho taxpayer, and no more bad ad vertising of our city on this score. It is understood that prominent sa loon men say they will enforce the Sun dny closing law themselves against ono of their -number who violatos the clou ing agreement, until the courts havo decided whether tho law Is constitu tionul or not. The Journal believes this Is one nf tho most practical steps ovor token f r tho protection of all concerned, and that great good will follow from the spirit of fairuoHS shown by tho saloon men of this city, in voluntarily abiding by n law thnt has never boforo been invoked, and was not known by many people to bo on tho statuto books.
