OPPOSE ANOTHER SALOON Some Commercial Street Business Men' Do Not Favor New Move Thoro is some tnlk rife among the ! business peoplo and others on Com (merclal street, near whero tho new sa- I loon is proposed to bo established by Messrs Morriflcld & Ilcater. It seems thoy hnvo lensed tho building now oc cupied by tho Qoodo millinery store for a term of three years, and propose to openn saloon in it. Some of tho Y. M. C. A. officials and others protest against tliis innovation, as thoro has not bcou a saloon in Mint block for many yoars, and they contend that no licenso should bo granted for these reasons. It is nlso statod Mint an agreoment was made between the prop erty owners who put tho buildings on, that sido of tho block, that no saloon should over bo conducted there. It is also contended Mint tho city council has refused to licenso saloons anywhero in the city, excepting in tho third ward. Upon investigating tho matter, it is found that the city officers probably havo no recourse in the matter, and will bo forced to issuo a license upon appli cation when tho necessary fees nnd bond is produced in good faith. City Recorder Judah says Mint there ' has novor boon a resolution passed to tliis knowlcdgo limiting saloons o any fono of tho four old wards. Ho points out the fact, however, that tho new charter excludes saloons from the three new wards established by it, but does not bolievo that there is any vcstlgo of record further than that. Even if some former council had passed a res olution to Mint effect, it would not be binding upon this council. In regard to the matter of tho prop erty owners having u contract to ex eludo saloons from tho block, it seems to bo somewhat uncertain. Sovernl of the owners nnd tenants claim 'thore is such an agreement, while others say there is not. Mr. Lamport exhibited his deed to the writer, and it 1ms no such pro visions. Councilman J. Frank llughes was seen, and he frnukly stntcs that he is opposed t ohnviug a saloon in that row, and bolieves there is somewhere extant a contrnct between the property ownors which will prevent such nu en terprise. Thus fnr ho has beon unable to locate tho contract, and says tho deeds to tho property which they hold in that row mnko no provisions of this kind. It would no doubt bo a good thing for tho property owners and business people in Mint row to have no saloons established there, but since tho lease has been closed, nnd tho city council has no precedent ngainst it, it is very doubtful whothor thoy can consistent-. ly refuse to issuo tho liconso, nnd tho saloon will probably bo established, un-1 less a compact between tho owners of the property enn bo lounu which win excludo tho same. o - 0LSTO3aiA..
