It. Mnnning yesterday afternoon, clmrging him with picking tho pocket of Klmer King on n circus ground car. King lost $83, and had tho suspected spotted. Ho reported tho robbery to tho sheriff's office, and Deputy Minto soon had the follow In charge. Shortly after tho prisoner was taken to tho court house, and while alono with Sheriff Culver, ho piade a desperato effort to escape. Ho jumped out of tho east window on the south sido of tho court house, a distance of 10 feet, sprnining ono of his ankles, and incapacitating him from walking. Deputy Minto was oil tho outside of tho court house, and tho fleeing robber nlniost jumped on top of tho ofHeer. Hi was at once carried back to tho jail, and tho Injured limb received medical attention. Sheriff Culver at once sized tho cap tive up nsn criminal who was wanted for other crimes, and communicated with Portland. Ho soon learnod thnt Manning's correct nnino is Rogers, and that ho is said to bo wanted in Oskosli, Wisconsin, on n robbery charge Ho jumped a $000 cash bail in that city in Juno, and is certainly n bad crook, If nil reports nro true. Ho had In his possession when captured about $14 in cash, and several curds, ono from S, Patrick, Chicago, a soap manufacturer, and a tickot purchased from St. Paul about two weeks ago on tho Knights Tomplar excursion to San Francisco. Tho money that tho prisoner is ac cused of stealing was not found on his person, and tho ovidenco of the King charge rests solely on tho lnttor's abil ity to recognize tho defendant.
