PIVft SALEM DALLAS ROAD The Gerlioger's May Be Able to Get People Interested L. Gorllngor owner of tho Salem, Dallas & Falls City railroad, and G, T. Gerllnger, manager of the same road, were In the city last evening for a few hours. They have recently returned from Portland, whore they were In consultation with several parties who are Interested In the pro posed Salem-Dallaa road. Mn G. T. Gerllnger In speaking to a Journal reporter last night, said: "We have nothing to give out at the present time, although we may have a good Item lm the 'course of a fewt weeka Wo still hope to be able to reach Salemi with a railroad, as we believe that It would be a paying Investment. The latter swore out a warrant in Judge Judah's court and Petersen was arrested, charged with larceny. Hio was placed wilder ?50 bonds to appear Tuesday. The amount taken was $10. . Engagement Announced. Mr. and Mrs. R. H, Coshow an nounce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Lois Coshow, to Mr. Chas, E. Fuller, the wedding to take place Wednesday, August 17, 1904, at the First Congregational church. Salem Gravel Case. The case of Salem vs. Mlnto Bros., ot al was submitted yesterday and Judge Galloway took It under advisement. Tonka, the usual cheat for vanilla, costs one or two cents for a certain amount; Schilling's Best vanilla a dol lar. . One is strong; the other is fine. One is rank ; the other is delicate. Nevertheless four-fifths- of "vanilla" is tonka. The 98 cents accounts for it. I The carnival baby show drew a large crowd yesterday afternoon and much Interest was manifested. After a careful Inspection the awards were made as follews: Edith May, daughter of Mr. and Mt3. Clayton F. Young, first prize, sil ver bread and milk cup, presented by Barrs jowelriy store. Don, Bon of Mr. and Mrs. Massey, second prize, chllds suit and hat, do nated by Stockton & Co. Llla Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mj-s. M. G. Baum, third prize, pair of shoes, donated by Irwlh & Petty. Tho awards gave general satlsfac tlon and the mothers, youngsters and friends enjoyed themselves during the afternoen: The baby winning first prize Is about six months old and Is the granddau ghter of Councilman J. W. Young and U. M. Parker, both gentlemen and their respective wives feel highly elated over their posterity. The uniform .iank Knights of Pyth las turned out In force to accept the Invitation kindly extended them by the Carnival committee. Their brilliant uniforms made a very pretty feature of the parado Circulation Managers Aufrance of the Journal and Morrison of the States man accompanied Up Press Agent Hodge of the carnival escorted the newsboys of the two dallies through the carnival last night. It was a treat for the little fellows nnd they will boost for the carnival when ever It Is In their power to do so. Tho Women of Woodcraft drill team gave two fine exhibition drills yester days both afternoon and evening, the latter especially fine, with tho colored light effects. Tho Stadium drew large and appre ciative oiowds. DIavolo made two rides without accident. Tho Japanese foot jugglers, slight of hand perform er, head balancer, and acrobats are tho best In their line, In fact every number Is a top notcher. Dixieland has a good collection of darkeys and they know how to sing. Dreamland contlnuos to mystify their largo audiences and It Is cer tainly one of tho best exhibitions on tho grounds. Tho mirror maze and crazy house aro' two good Illusions. Tonight tho Women of Woodcraft will give another drill at 9 o'clock. Mrs. Dr. Pomeroy, tho team captain will come up from Portland today especially for the drill. The mombors of tho team are as follews: Mies Rose Shutz, Miss M, Schutz, Miss May Allen, Mrs. M. D DeLong, Mrs. Joslo Symes, Mrs. Anna Bern hart, Mrs. Fannie Erlxon, Mrs. J. Capper, Mrs. F. Day, Mrs. Ida Rollo, Mrs. M. Betchol, Mrs. Verdle Van Pat ton and Dr. E. M. Pomeroy, captain. This will be the closing day of the carnival and at midnight the Wood men carnival will bo at arf end. The week has been an agreeable one and many pleasnt memories will boleft of their first visit of the Southern Carnival company to this city. Mad! Gras festivities will prevail throughout tho evening and tho fun will be fast and furious. LYONS TURNER STAGE Has An Exciting Runaway Severely Injuring Driver Lake Yestorddy the stage which runs be tween Lyons and Turner had an ex citing runaway. They were on tho return trip from Lyons and when within about two and one-half miles from Turner the horses took fright and ran away, and after running a considerable distance they ran off an embankment and tipped the stage over. The driver, W. H. Lake, was thrown vlolontly to the ground and his shoulder dislocated and sustained seveial other minor Injuries. The othor occupans of tho stage, Miss Gardner, of Sayton, and Miss Ruby Helmken, of Salem, were not Injured. Mr. Lake was taken to Turner and Dr. Ransom attended to his Injuries.
