DROWNED WHILE BATHING Dalton Stoops Tried to Swim the River at Eugene Eugene, Ore., Aug. 8 Dalton Stoops, aged 17 years, son of James Stoops, of Pleasant Hill, was drowned In the Willamette river about 50 yards above the Eugene bridge, while in swimming Saturday afternoon about 3:15 o'clock. The boy was in swimming with a number of other boys, and started to swim across the river. As he was not a good swimmer hlB companions cau tioned him not to attempt the feat When he reached the middle of the river the boy began to cry for help. His cousin swam out to assist him, but ho sank to the bottom and was drowned. Word wa3 immediately sent up town and In a few minutes n large crowd had gathered. Chas. Croner, who was driving along the road with his wagon, succeeded In bringing the body to the surface, using a long hook. The body had been In the wat or about ten minutes before it was rescued. Efforts were made to bring the boy to life again, but in vain. The body was brought to Day & Hen derson's undertaking parlors. Tho boy was visiting at the home of his uncle, Wm. In the August number of tho Pacific Monthly Is described one of the mam moth 5000 horse-power generators of tho Niagara Falls Power company. Ono of the mammoth 5000 horse power electric generators of the Nia gara Falls Power company Is shown. It Is operated by a turbine located 140 feet beow It in a wheo-plt cut out of sold rock. Connecting the turblno with this genorator Is a steel tube or shaft. The generator makes 250 revo lutions por minute. As one horse powor more than equals the power of 10 men, this machine represents tho force of an army of GO thousand able bodied laborors. In tho station where this genorator stands there are 10 similar machines, the total output of which Is 55,000 horso-powor In tho sta tlon. This represents tho force of moro than a half million of mon. It Is by these machines that the falls of Niagara are "harnessed." Water (lows from the upper river, through a canal to penstocks, which carry it down tho pit to the turbines. Leaving tho turbines, tho water flows through a tunnol over a mile long, 200 feet bolow tho surface, to the lower river. This tunnel runs under the heart of the city. o Road Franchise Granting. The Ronton county court has grant ed a franchise to tho Willamette Vnl loy Electric company to construct a road south from Corvallis along tho public highway. The line will nlso be built to Albany. This is supposed to be tho southern extension of the Portland-Snlem road. Incorporated re cently by the French company.
