O- CASTOR I A ' For Infants and Children. Th9 Kind Yeu Have Always Unto Bears the Blgaatureof MaCt4f COLD DEAL Companies Are Reported Have Merged Their Interests to New York, July 21. It Is said on good authority that tho plan for the merger of tho National Lead company ami the United Lead company will bo favorably acted upon at today's meet ing of the directors of tho Nntlonnl Lead company and that tho deal will bo consummated1 at an early date. He ports have been- current at different times during the last two years that the rival lead Interests would get to gether. Negotiations 'havo 'at times been held looking to such a result. Each time, however, they came to naught, and the rivalry became bit ter. It seems Ithat It was this rivalry which was directly resppnslbloi for bringing tho two Interest together. Il Is believed that In tho proposed merger tho National will tako over only the manufacturing plants of Its rival, and that the mining Interests owend by tho Guggenheim-Ryan com bine which also, controls the United Lead comapny will bo otherwlso dis posed of. If thl $ plan Is carried out the mining properties of tho United Lead company will probably bo turned over to tho American Smelting and Refining company, which is also con trolled by tho Guggenheim-Ryan peo ple. o Salmon Are Running. Astoria, Or., July 21. For tho time this year there Is a good run of sal mon entering tho river, and around Sanrt Island yesterday and last night the gillnetters' made good catches, showing an Improvement on tho catch of soveral hundred por cent. Whether It Is only a spurt of ai day or two, or tho beginning of a big run, Is not known, but tho latter Is belloved to bo true by many, as this Is the time that the run In Monterey Hay was ex pected. Tho pack at tho present time, on a basis of 48 tails to the case, Is not ovot 100,000 cases, which Is about tho same as It was at this time lost year, and If a good run comes and continues, an average pack will be put up. Tho cold storage people are fully 80 per cent be hind their pack of last year, and It will bo Impossible to catch up under any circumstances. Tho size and quality of tho present run are alll that could bo do3lrod, and as the water In tho river Is clearing up rapidly tho fish aro expected to go up the river, and permit tho seins to make some good catches for tho first time during tho present season. Greater preparations havo been made this year than over before to handle a great run, and If tho opportunity offers some great records will bo broken. Good 8plrlts.
