(Special). Great excitement was created at Nye Creek Monday by the report spread ing that a woman had been found dead on the sandhills. Merchant Loorals and the young man who runs one of Jack Porter's meat markets headed a party who followed a group of excited white-faced children, and by tho time they got out to the sand dunes there were nearly a hundred men, women and children, enmpers, cripples and even people on crutches. The woman lay stretched out on the bare, white sand, her lower limbs partly covered with sand. Mr. Loom Is noticed however that she was breathing, In fact sleeping soundly, and almost audibly snoring. In a mo ment as the crowd came close around she awoke. "Why, It Is Miss French of Albany!" exclaimed several, and that aston ished and popular young society wo man rubbed her eyes, and was very much alive. She had gone to sleep on tho warm sand dunes. Tho young people with her had partially covered her with sand, and left her. Other children found her nnd she lay so still they thought her dead and thus tho report got started. The. beautiful sleeper who created this oxcltement was none other than the locally famous Albany girl, Miss Bva French the pretty summer girl who adorns tho front page of the Southern Pacific and Corvallls and Eastern railroad summer resort adver tising folder. Miss French has tho reputntlon of being one of tho most charming seaside young women that any of tho Pacific coast beaches can boast of possessing, and was the inno cent cause of a passing excitement. A Gamblers' Holdup. At Newport ore several money games running and Saturday night somo of tho practical jokers among tho gambling fraternity put up a hold up game that came near resulting seriously. Tholy got a well-fixed young man from Dallas to carry a small grip over to Nye Creek into which they couuted $000 in silver and then changed It for part of a bag of shot and Iron- washers, that clinked liko dollars, all tied up and sealed In anothor 'shot bag. Half way over thoro leaped out of the grense-wood brush, where the trail wa3 darkest, two men with masks and revolvers and It was "stand and deliver." Tho young man made somo resist ance but was ovorpowored nnd the robbers got away with tho gripsack full of supposed coin. When tho story got out tho Newport chief of police was aroused nnd somo of the force woro out beating the bills nearly all night. Sheriff Jim Boss wns down from Toledo but when ho loarned who tho complainants woro he walked softly nway from the Job. A warrant was got out by tho gamblors, charg ing tho young man with getting awaj with tho $600, supposed to be In the grip. In the melon he had recognlzod ono of tho masked men and it Jawnod on hlH mind thai he was a pretty cloto friend of tho gamblors. He swore out a warrant for the holdup man oharglng him with nn assault with a dangerous woapon. Before the emus could be brought I before Police Judge Oscar Olssen of Newport tho wholo matter was pulled off the stocks and the prnctlcal jok ers had to set up tho oystors all around. But the Dallas young man was carod out of a year or two of growth by his experiences. American Peaches for England. Now York, July 13. CHICKENS MAKE MONEY California Town Has Thou sands of the Feathered Tribe "A town of 6000 Inhabitants devoted entlrey to the poultry business" says a recent visitor to California. "Between Petaluma and Santa Rosa one will see little elBe than chickens and chicken-coops along the railroad. But the business Is making money for thoso engaged In li, and the poultry-raisers figure on a net profit of $1 a ;;ear on each hen. Some of these ranches have as many as 10.000 hens scattered over them, so tho owners must be doing pretty well. "You will see little coops strung out In all directions for miles, and the poultry seemB to run to the White Leghorn variety principally. "San Francisco which Is across the bay from Petaluma, Is the great center of the California egg industry, nnd shipments are made to nil parts of the world. Eggs, as a rule, are higher here than in Portland, and In winter 25 cents a dozen is the ruling price. This Is in cash, not barter or trade, and there Is no quibbling over the price. "Sonoma countj where these poul try ranches are so numerous, was, 40 years ago, given entirely to wheat and potato raising, but now this in dustry is only of secondary Impor tance. The chickens have the coun try, and are likely to retain It so long as the poultry business pays so well." Decomposed Body Found. The badly decomposed body of William H. Miller, a bicycle repairer, of Albany was found at his home Monday afternoon, the man having evidently passed away early Sunday morning. Miller has been drinking on tho Fourth, and since that time had been rather undor the weather. He lived with his parents, and, they having gone to the seacoast he occu pied the house alone.
