This Is tho second attempt within a week to wreck the overland train, and is probably the act or a demented person. Tho company has offered a roward for tho apprehension of the party who placed tho tlo across the track a few days ago, and' this last attempt will lead to renewed vigilance. ,i Rehearsals! Derrick, of tho Oregon Stato Leaguo, In tho SalenirAlhany gamo In that city Sunday. During tho four games of tho Salem-Albany series, Just concluded, Derrick's umpiring has boon very fla grant. Tho visiting team often suf roied from poor judgment, but more often it was tho homo team. This was due, so say tho men who manage baseball In Albany, to tho fact that Derrick was ".sore" because tho man agement of tho teaihi was glvon to Pitcher Kred Gregory instead of to himself when Preble resigned. Gre gory, against whom Derrick is said to have a special spite, because of tho managership, was In tho box Sunday, and. in the opinion of tho spectators, Derrick got revenge The Albany manager "pitched his head off." but couldn't win against such decisions on balls and strikes as tho umplro handed out. The gamo was oxcltlng, however; both teams were playing splendid ball, and tho nerves of tho ciowd, which was tho largest that has attended any game this year, wero at tho highest pitch, Tho score was 4 to 3 In favor of Al bany until tho ninth Inning, when Der rick practically 'presented Salem with a run, tlelng the scoro. In that ovont ful Inning tho umplro also fined Don ovan, Albany's first baseman for a trivial offense, and then, when ho or dered Donovan to tho bench tho ciowd swarmed! down off tho bleach ers and started toward him. The peo ple could hardly bo restrained from flocking onto the diamond, but wero finally appeased when tho first base man was allowed to remain In tho game by tho pleadings of Gregory and Captain Raymond, and the goner ous action of Joo Fay, tho Salem cap tain. In tho tenth Inning SI Davis knocked a long, high ball over tho fence. It wont. wide,, of tho fence foul lino .several feet' In tho eyes of all tho spectators, hut, to tho surprise of both teams, Derrick called In a fair ball, and Davis trotted around the bases, winning tho gamo for the Sa lem team. Thon the wrath of tho crowd know no bounds. A howling, Jeering mob followed tho umplro from tho grounds for several blocks. Derrick will probably umpire no more In tho Stato League. Manager Gregory and President G, M. Turner, of tho Albany Baseball Association, say they will do all in their power to have him discharge 1, and as tho Sa lem and Eugene toanis aro also dissat isfied with his work, he will very probably "got tho ax." Tho first of tho season ho did good work, but lately his umpiring has been of tho "grand stand" order. Htlt HCtMi Is Gilael.
