Advice to Collectors.
There Is a growing difficulty In se
curing fine copies of the early Issues
of United 'Statbs sltamps, saj St.
Nicholas. The makers of the3e Issues
wore not required by tho government
to bo careful In relation to tho per
forating of them. Tho paper was of a
brittle quality very easily broken
or Injured by careless handling. The
postmasters who canceled theso
stamps cared for nothing except to
thoroughly obliterate them, so that
they used unnecessary quantities of
ink for this purpose. All the3o things
combined to make It difficult to find
used copies of tho early Issues of our
country In fine condition. 'There aro
fow collectors, and thereforo not many
of those stamps were saved In unused
condition The consequence of this
state of things Is and will bo an In
creasing difficulty in securing these
stamps In such condition as Is accept
able to collectors who are at all par
ticular as to the looks of their al
bums. These many collectors tako to
fill the spaces In their albums until
they can secure stamps of finer qual
ity. This seems, on the whole, to be
a mistake, for the possession of a
specimen even though It be a poor ope
cause a collector to neglect to secure
another of the samo stamp.

According to tho Oregonlan letters
from Eastern Oregon, Harvey Scott
means to irrigate the politicians over
thero into voting for him for United
States senator. But a Salem man will
be after their votes too.
The Oregonlan reports that a stato
official In Eastern Oregon let a two-bit
piece get away from him without tak
ing a sworn voucher, and there was
quite a commotion for' a time until it
was located.
A Good Bear Story.
Several weeks ago Fred Dawson
sold a couple of small boars to Rob
ert Davis who took them back to
Beatrice, Nebraska with him. The
bears wore captured over In Linn
county and shipped hero to Mr. Daw
son. A Linn county man has Just re
ceived a Nebraska paper which tolls
