Members of Various Crafts WW Build up Unions by Taking In Men From Interior Towns Carpenters Form New East Side Local. Portland' Jeurnal: Labor union men report that the re" will be greater activity" In organization during the coming summer -than for several years Da.nL Thev declare that tho conclu sion haa boon reached that tho only offectlvo way In which the Industrial conditions can bo bettered ls to see that all the wage earners aro union ized, and tho quicker this done the sooner will tho desired results bd re alized. To carry this Idea Into execution tho International Barbers' union has promised to put a -state organizer In tho local field. It Is said that In all probability a Portland man will be chosen for tho position. Prominent raeinbors of tho union Bay that In all probability E. O. Mayor will be ap pointed to the position. They stnto that ho has been an onorgetlc work er In the ranks of unionism for years; that he lb capable and) understands the movement In all all Its details, and his selection1 would meet with th.e en title approval of everyone Interacted In the matter. Tho barbers are Introducing anoth er plan that they bellovo will redound to their benefit. It Is also lm tho line of organisation, but In all material re spects it Is entirely different from the usual mode of procedure. In any town In the state that has ndt enough barbers to form a union of their own It Is the Intention to Induce them to become affiliated with the Portland local Before an independent union can be established It Is neccsrary to havo 10 charter members. Not that many barbers are found In a laTgo number of the Interior towns; some of them have all the way from one to nine. In all placer of this description organizers will be sent for tho pur pose of persuading them to become nf filiated with the Portland organiza tion. A substantial start has already been made in this direction. Although In another state, the barbers of V.c. couver, Wash., havo mado applica tion to Join the local union, and It Is said that their wishes will bo com Piled with. By tho time nil tho small towns are taken Into tho font un.-w the same plan It Is said that the mom- borshlp of tho Portland union win ha Increased by several hundred. Tho carpenters aro also unusually active In tho line of organization. Last night they formed a new loi on, thn East Side, making tho second union organized acrosn the river during the past few weeks. Throre am nr i, local carpenters' unions, the third be ing on this side of tho river. When they all get In good working order and a fairly strong membership It is tho intention) to form- what will be known as tho district council. This will bo mado up of delegates sent from each of tho throe locals. It will bo the contral body of tho Portland carpon ters, and will direct the lndiMtrini f. fairs of all tho mechanics following mo iraae. when thev become thnn. oughly organized It Is tho Intention of tn carpontors to make an effort to re establish tho eight-hour day In certain localities, and bring tho wage scalo up to a higher level. An organizer for tho clgarmakors Is oxpected to arrive in the city in a few days who will devote some tlmo to looking after tho Interests of tho craft. But It Is not thought likely that ho will romaln In the field for any great longth of time. The cigar mak ers stato that they aro already pretty thoroughly organized, and' Just now thoy are giving mora attention to other matters.
