Olnnt PORTLAND SUFFERS FIRE Quarter Million Lost Above Insurance Water Supply Proves Inade quate and Engines Are . Weak Oregonlan, May 13th: A little tongue of llnme among some shavings In the engine room of the Day Lum ber Company on tho Macadam road billows of flamo tossed hundreds of feet high In the air. Tho puny streams of water which tho laboring engines threw Into tho maelstrom of flro were swallowed up like the trickle from a wnterlng can. Tho fiery tempest beat tho firemen back from the long ele vated roadways lined with lumber, and then rioted unhindered and untram meled among the sawnllls, offices and storehouses of the three stricken com panies. So terrific was the "heat en gendered in the blazing area that at ono time a miniature cyclone of flamo or a flrespout formed In the air, and a twisting column of flre reaching at least 200 feet Into the air tore across the burning district like n tornado. Tho losses are estimated at $365 000. Insurnnco $100,000. In threo separate columns tho flames advanced respectively from the Day, tho Powers and tho trunk com panies toward the railroad track. To stay this onward march was an im possibility, to attempt it would have been nn Idiotic waste of energy. But at the railroad tho flro fighters made a stand. As each column of flamo reachc-1 tho track, tho big streams, pumped, by doubled-up engines, wore turned on the whirling tongue of flre, and In each case tho flame was un able to Jump the railroad and reach tho piles of lumber on tho other side: From tho railroad to the river this morning there Is naught but ashes. Had the flames crossed tho railroad track tho flro would havo boon burn ing yet, with a battle front more than a mllo wide. Tho lack of water hampered the flro department. Only four engines could bo used to advantage, and ono of these had to be placed on the rlvor bank, far from tho flro. When a few pounds of dynamite would havo mado a gap in the long front of tho flames, there was no explosive to bo had. And so It went. Within tho boundar ies of the flre tho flames held high carnival and doyoured overythlng that was combustible. All that tho flro department' could 'do was to wait by tho gap which tho railroad tracks made until the flames reached them, and then to keep the flre from cross ing. This they did. DIED. BIRDSALL.
