The sawmill men of Oregon have,
treat cause for rejoicing over the res-
loratlon of tho old, lumber rates for,
nterior sawmills, that makes it possl-
ile to resume all tho milling and log-
;lng operations thai were Intercepted
iy a prohibitory advance made in
anuary. Tho Commercial Club of this
gity rejoices over tho result that has
Seen reached largely throuch Its in.
ftrumentality. Hundreds of letters
rero written to sawmill men, and
lunJreds of complaints were received
the most grievous character. Theso
omplalnts were laid before- tho traf-
lo managers throueh the officers of
lie club, and brought to tho attention
Bf tho principal officers of tho Harri
dan system to tho injustice that had
leen done Western Oregon industries,
Ills work was backed up by similar
Organizations in Eugene, Cottago
irove and other places. Officers of
lie Salem Commercial Club were In
cited to address the principal granges
pf Western Oregon, and the great
Corporation was up against a solid
array of business interests, and grow
ling public sentiment, that demanded
action.
A Great Victory.
The most important result of the re-
tent visit of Traffic Director J. C.
Stubbs, of tho Southern Pacific Com
pany, Is tho reduction of tho rate on
lumber from points in Oregon to coast
Mnts in California to tho former
figures of $3.10 per 2000 pounds. In
consequence of tho raising of tho rato
some months ago to ?5 to all "points
which could bo reached by water,
there was a great reduction in the
number of men employed both In the
woods and tho mills of a number of
companies operating up tho valley.
When Mr. Stubbs was In Oregon this
week a delegation of lumber men
waited on him and. obtained from him
a promise to restore tho former rate.
Tho good effect of this announcement
Is seen in the following dispatch from
Eugene:
"Eugene, Or., April 20. Nothing has
occurred for a long tlmo which In so
gratifying to tho business interests of
Lane county as tho act of tho South
ern Pacific Company in restoring tho
rato of $3.10 per ton on lumber from
Willamette valley points to San Fran
cisco. SInco tho rato was raised last
fall to $5 per ton, tho vast lumbering
Interests of this county have been un
able to operate the mills to anything
llko their full capacity, and as a re.
suit nearly every business has felt
somo depression.

a year ago was running a force of
