Hunker, tho man that discovered tho Hunker Creek mines In tho Klondike and dug three or four millions In gold out of them, Is guarding himself against a woman. Ho Is not exactly undergoing a selgo, but ho expects his castlo at 2428 Bancroft was to bo stormed any minute and he swears ho Isn't going to take any chances that may be altogether unnecessary. Tho mllllonalro minor, for ho"Is rated as such, claims Mrs. Christine Carroll for his nemesis. Mrs. Car roll's actions In regard to the afore. said castlo on Bancroft way dis pleased him awhile ago. Sho re fused and he appealed to tho law. It took a writ of restitution, backed by tho law, to finally accomplish her ejectment. Tho whole case was fought out In Judge Melvln's court last Friday. Hunker had no difficulty In proving that tho houso In question is his own, In her own bdhalf Mrs. Carroll sought to show that It had been glvon to her by Hunker as an engagement present. Hunker denied that matri mony had ever- figured in the trans action at all. Anyway Judge Melvln said that Mrs. Carroll was wrong and gave Hunker possession of the house, Hunkor was so woll satisfied with his victory that ho did not go near tho houso on that day. Ho let fivo deputy sheriffs go out to take pos session of tho house. But when tho doputy shorlffs arrived they found that Mrs. Carroll had been thcro be- foro them. Sho had takon away most of the furniture and had a lot packed up for future delivery to tho express man. Tho window curtains were, gone, bed covers gono, as was every thing that could bo moved In a hur ry. Somo of tho things that could not bo moved away easily wero stored In tho houso of a neighbor who had received them on tho strength of Mrs. Carroll's statement that they wero for storage. Of course when Hunker heard of this Bacrilego he hurried to Berkoloy post haste. Ho was angry .clear through and sworo vengeance. Tho next day an expressman showed up to take more things away, but ho was scared off when Hunkor Baw him, Slnco then Hunker has been expect ing a visitation from Mrs. Carroll any tlmo and Is constantly on guard. Hunker looks upon Mrs. Carroll as tho most ungrateful porson ho over know. Ho says sho camo to him a t() year ago with tho claim that she was his cousin. Ie has assisted her in a material way. Reports of a defalcation by an employo of the Chemical National Bank, one .of the largest financial Institutions here, have been cleared up by a statement from Cashier Francis Halpin. It is to tho effect that a trusted clork In the check department, whom ho names, disappeared 10 days ago, after having faithfully served the bank for 22 years, and that an investigation of his accounts disclosed that they nre "out of proof" to the extent of 22,- G38.97. The case contains some peculiar features, Inasmuch as he did not handle any money or securities, but was employed only In the department mentioned. His duties were, with others, to tnko the checks brought In from tho morning's clearances, etc., verify them, and enter them In the day books, from which the amounts wore entered In the ledgers. Precisely how the abstractions wero made Is something of a mystery, for the bank officials, while discovering tho failure of his books to "prove" by more than $22,000, havo been un able to discover that any vouchers aro missing. Tho operations extend over a period of several months, and that ho was able to conceal them for bo long a period was thought remark able. The clerk reported 111, and was told to go home and get well. A day or two later, his wife says, he went out and failed to return. Tho loss to the Chemical National Is trivial, but tho method of the al leged embezzler has caused tho offi cers much trouble, as tho checks pass through many hands, and collusion among the clerks would, they say, havo been out of tho question.
