John Eckert, who lives near here, had a narrow escape from death yesterday, because he was tender hearted. There wa3 a horse on the farm 'which he had ownedi for nearly 20 years. Its hold on life was so precarious that It had become emaciated holding on Yet Mr. Eckert hesitated to cut the thread which bound the animal to this existence. Finally when the horso was unable to eat, and a tottering skeleton, tho kind-hearted farmer conceived a plan for Its destruction which would spare his feelings, bo quick, sure and painless. He bought two sticks of dynamite, a cap and a bit of fuse Ho tied the dynamite together, inserted the cap and fuse in one stick tied tho death dealing bundle around tho horse's neck and lighted the fuse. ' Then he started for the orchord, about 60 yards away, at as brisk a run as his 60 years would permit. But he hadn't gone far when he heard a nolso behind him. Ho turned about and be held the poor old) horse, mad with fright at the sizzling fuse, trotting close at his heels, and proceeding as energetically as a coal. Mr. Eckert" settled down and did some really wonderful running. A barbed wire fence separated the orch ard from the barnyard, but ho took It like a college hurdler. Tho horse not havo been trained to follow hounds, foozled, and to this Mr. Eckert prob ably owes tho fact tnat he is still alive. He thinks ho covered about 50 acres of orchard land in tho next two sec onds, and then something happened. The next thing he knew he was nice ly placed In the" forks of an applo tree, About 100 feet of tho fence was down, and the horse had vanished complete ly. Mr. Eckert was In Grangevillo yes terday to seo what could bo done toi ward repairing tho disordered func tions of his left ear, which lias re fused to recognize sound. Gand Opea House JNO. F.
