Mystery surrounds tho death of Reason Mc- Connell, aged C5, an old pioneer of Or egon, who was killed yesterday after' noon at his homo In King's Valley, by a gunshot wound In tho headi Whether Is was accidental or Belf-In-fllcted will probably never be known. Tho deceased, his wife and nephew, William Graham, were sitting on tho porch chatting Just aftor eating din ner, when tho former told the young man to go and water some Btock at tho barn beforo going to -the field for the afternoon's work. A few minutes later ho entered the bedroom, saying ho was not feeling, well, and would Ho down for awhile. Shortly afterward his wife heard the discharge of a gun and tho fall of a heavy body to the floor. Rushing Into tho room, she discovered her hus band lying on his face, with tho en- tiro back part of his head blown off, whllo near him wns a shotgun, which sho remembered had been left stand ing In tho corner. Several years ago a horso fell with Mr. McConnoll, badly crushing him, nad Inflicting injuries from which ho had neVer recovered.
