Loss of Admiral Makaroff
One That Can Hardly
Be Estimated
London, April 13. The losa of Ad
miral Makaroff Is a blow to Russia
that can hardly bo estimated. Ho
was the very heart and soul of tho
Russian aggression, at Port Arthur.
Up to tho tlmo of his assuming tho
direction of naval affairs, tho Rus
sian war ships wore crouching and
shivering under the guns at Port Ar
thur, awaiting a renowal of tho Jap
anese Intermittent attacks, and when
they came tho Czar's fighting ma
chines sputtered back In a blind way.
In placo of all this, Admiral Maka
roff actually resumed the offensive.
On the night of March 10th ho sent
six torpedo boats to sea to look for
Japanese war ships. They met tho
enemy, and maintained a hot fight,
each sldo losing a torpedo boat. Ob
serving that his torpedo boat was
foundering Makaroff went out with
two cruisers to face tho entire Japan
ese fleot, but was too lato to bo of as
sistance. This action on tho part of
tho bravo Russian was a perfect In
dex to the character of his work, and
the manner In which he endeavored
to lnfuso life Into tho men at Port
Arthur.

of the 11th, a suspicious looking boat
approached tho mouth of tho river
Laohoe. Tho Russians immediately
opened fire, when the lights on the
boat were put out, and the craft re
tired. At the beginning of tho can
nonado seven junks put out from the
right bank of the river, but as soon
as the firing commenced, were head
ed out to sea.
Again the Japs.
Tokio, April 13. A dispatch from
Wiju states that a company of Rus
sian troops attempted to cross the
Yalu west of town this morning. A
company of Japs drove them back.
Twenty Russians aro known to have
been killed, and they belonged to the
Twelfth regiment of sharpshooters.
Several other Russian parties have
been repulsed In an attempt to cross
tho river.

zither concert, assisted by local tal
ent, Thursday, April 14th, at 8 p. m.

State Game Warden Baker, of Cot
tage Grove, Is in the city. He reports
18 convictions for killing deer, and
one conviction for killing oik, and

oral staff has confirmed most of tho
details of tho blowing up of the Rus
sian battleship Petropavlovsk by a
mlno this morning at Port Arthur.
Twenty-flvo Bailors escaped from
the Ill-fated vessel in addition to tho
four officers mentioned. Tho escape
of Grand Duke Cyril was marvelous.
Although seriously injured he swam
ashore.
Tho Czar has dispatched a courier
to Madamo Makaroff, conveying his
condolences.

St. Petersburg, April 13. VIce-Ad-
mlral Grlgorowich sends tho following
ofllclal account of tho loss of the
Petropavlevsk: "The Petropavlovsk
struck a mine at the entrance of tho
harbor today. Tho mlno exploded and
the vessel was overturned. Our squad
ron was near Golden Mountain at tho
time. The Japanese were then ap
proaching Port Arthur. Vlce-Admlfal
Makaroff Is apparently dead. Grand
Duke Cyril, Captain Yekovloeff, with
five officers and 32 sailors, escaped.
A number of bodies have already been
recovered."

Unique Trip to Be Undertaken by

latest unique trip Is one contemplated
by Henry Hoffman, of La Crosse,
Wl9. Hoffman who Is a deop sea div
er, Intends to walk from La Cross to
St. Louis, a distance of COO miles, on
tho bed of the Mississippi river.
He will start as soon as the water
warms- up a little, and ho expects tq

He will bo accompanied by a boat
carrying air pumps and provisions,
and claims ho will leavo tho water
only for meals and to sleep. Hoff
man has ordered a special diving suit

Automobile Works destroyed.
Detroit, Mich., April 13. A. flro
started in tho varnish room of tho
Cadilac Automobile Works, and, fed
by gasoline, destroyed one of the
largest plants of Its kind in tho coun
try this morning.
Two workmen were Injured while
escaping from tho burning building.
Tho firm bad $3,000,000 worth of
orders on hand.
Mormons Have Disappeared.
Washington, D. C, April 13. Six of
tho 12 mormon witnesses for whom
summons have been issued by tho
senate commltteo to appear and testi
fy in tho Smoot case, have disap
peared. All effort! to find them have
been In vain.
Chairman Burrows sent word to
President Smith that it Is vory unfor
tunate for tho church that theso peo
ple havo gone into hiding. Bishop
Grant, who is one of the witnesses, is
known to bo in Europe.

Washington, D. C, April 13. It was
learned this aftornooa that President
Roosevelt Is not in sympathy with the
plan of tho sennto leaders to have tho
postofflce investigation held this Bum
mer, and that ho Is ondcavorlng to
dissuade tbem from that course, be
lieving It would bo futile as woll as
Impolitic. Tho President said as
much to Senator Aldrlch, who was
summoned from tho conference.

ber 15, 1901,
In tho affldavlt on which tho at
tachment was grahted, Meyer says
that on August 1, 1901, Dr. Webb was
the owner of Incomo bonds which had
been Issued by tho Mohawk & Malone
Railroad Company, of tho par valuo
of $3,900,000, and Induced, him (Moy
er) to purchaso them by falsely rep
resenting that tho Now York Central
& Hudson River Railroad Company
was desirous of purchasing the bonds
and through its officials offored to
purchase them for a price exceeding
$3,900,000.
"Those representations," says tho
affidavit, "wore mado to mo with tho
knowledge of tholr falsity on tho part
of the defendant, and with Intent to
cheat and defraud mo for tho purpose
of Inducing me, In rellanco thereon,
to pay him tho sum of $3,900,000",
which was largely In excess of tho ac
tual valuo of tho bonds to tho extent
of $400,000."
