An official account of a skirmish between two small bod ies of Japanese and Russians on the banks of tho Yalu, which nrrived to day, states that a Jap lieutennnt and flvo marines were sent In a Corean fishing boat to reconnoiter about the mouth of the river. They sighted sev en Russian cavalrymen on the Chi nese bank, and attacked them. The Russians, though reinforced, were finally driven back, losing one killed and two wounded. No loases were suffered by tho Japs. This report ap parently concerns the same fight men tioned In Kuropatkln's statement. Che Foo, April 13. A private dis patch from Port Arthur states that tho Japanese attacked Port Arthur this morning. '? -ir.ix ,d i BY ACCLAMATION The Old Warhorse of Douglas County Goes in Again Harris Forces Subside at the Last and He Is WithdrawnUtmost Harmony Prevails and Binger Hermann Renominated by Acclamation on the First Ballot The Harris forces apparently had given up the fight for his nomination at 10 o'clock last night, and the hotel loblea and corridors presented a de serted appearanco, more funeral than festive, so far as tho opposition to Hermann was concerned. If they were in evidence the plotting was away back In the dim recesses of their private apartments, and tho Lane county snickersnee was hidden far up undor the coat tails of the band of university students, who had adopted practical politics for a livelihood. Tho ush ers seated tho delegations on a plan previously arranged, and submitted to each delegation, with placards up designating their locality. Somo of tho smaller counties wero givoh thq boxes, and President Hal, D. Fatton, of tho Salem Young Men's Republi can Club, handled the ushers, and seated the delegates. Ho was assisted by Chas. E. Murphy, J. O. Graham, Ellis Richardson, Mac Hofer, Paul Wallace and L, R. Stlnson, of tho club. Tho stago was- decorated with flags, and tho customary plcturo of President Roosevelt, who has boon mentioned in somo states as a possi ble candidacy for tho presidency. The delegations at tho hotel grow very Im patient to have tho affair pulled off, and It would havo been all ovor with yesterday If they could havo got nt It. But It was better to havo tho usual preliminaries gone through with, and tho rough edges wear off, and havo the minority reconciled to their fato. Promptly Senator Marsters, tho recognised Hormann manngor, nominated Hon. George C. Brownell as temporary chairman. Tho Clackamas statesman took tho stand and in a few woll chosen wordB thanked the convention for tho honor. Ho then proceeded ac cording to program. Senator Percy Kelly, of Linn, nomi nated Galo S.
