(From tho Oregon Toachor's Monthly
The attendance at tho Capital Nor
mal school at Salem 1b larger than
over before. Tho rooms aro full to
ovorllowlng. A largo class has been
organized In stenography, and four
typowrltera aro kept busily clicking
from morning till night. ,
Tho Salem public schools have a
fund of $800 with which to purchaBo
pictures for school decoration. Tho
sources of tho fund aro as follews:
Amount raised by Elson exhibit, $172.
70; amount raised by Turner exhibit,
$200; subscriptions from toachors.
$80.50;subscrlptlons from citizens,
$350. Forty pictures havo been pur
chased and framed for tho schools.
It Is probablo that tho romalnder of
tho pictures will not bo solcctcd bo-
foro tho summer vacation. Tho gen-
orous response of tho cltlzons to an
appeal for donations was most grati
fying. Nothing has? itvcr boon atf
tomptod In tho history of tho Salem
schools that has resulted In so much
of lntorest and good will for tho
Tho snlarlos of teachers In Orogon
nro not as high as they woro In 1S93
and 1804 In tho midst of tho great
nnanclal disturbances which forced
thorn down to a vory low limit. In
1893 tho average pay of malo toachors
In Orogon was 161.11; fonrnlo. $41.74.
In 1894 males recclvod $50, nnd fo
malos received $39.50. Tho last report
of tho Superintendent of Public In
struction gives tho averago salaries
for males In 1902 at $47.58, nnd fo
malcB at $37.01. Tho cost of living
has moro than doubled slnco 1894,
but tcachorB salaries nro less than
they woro at that time. Toachors
aro largely to blamo for this condition;
thoy havo boon too roluetant to as-
sort their needs; tluoy havo boen too
patient, trusting too Implicitly In the
gcnoroslty of tho public to como to
tholr assistance But tho public re
gards It as a business proposition and
will pay no moro than la demanded
by tho toachors of th stato. No lady
toachor can live In comfort on a sal
ary of $37.01 por month whon sho
can teach but sovon months In tho
year, which Is tho nvorago Bchool
term In Oregon. This would make a
teacher averago $2C5 a year or about
$22 a month. Doard can not bo had
for less than $12 a month In tho cheap
est quarters, and this would loavo tho
teachor but $10 for clothlnc. books
and a hundred othor expenses sho Is
expectod to Incur. No porson can fol
low leaching exclusively as a busi
ness on such a meagor salary, and It
la but little wondor that our beat
teachera aro constantly leaving tho
profession and going Into othor things.
Many hundreds of othors In Oregon
are remaining In school work honim?
for bettor enumeration for tholr ardu
ous labor and If this hope Is not soon
reallzod our schools will suffor an ir.
