WALLA RIVER Is the Freakiest Kind of a Freak Stream1 Gets a Divorce From Itself and Each Half Does Business by It self Tho contontlon over the division of tho water of tho Tum-a-lum and tho Llttlo Walla Walla rivers, and tho formation of the first Irrigation district In the stato on tho Llttlo Walla Walla taken all togothor forms an Interesting story. In tho first place, tho Walla Walla rlvor Is a freak. Instead of being formed of two or more streams, tho main rlvor comes down from tho Ditto mountains In ono stream until It roaches a point near Milton, when It abruptly divides Into two streams tho Tum-a-lum, flowing wostorly In a sweeping soml-clrcle with tho convex curvo to tho north, and tho Llttlo Walla Walla, swooping also west ward, with Its convex curvo bonding to the south, (ho area botweon tho two stroams forming an Immense oh- long clrclo of fortilo soil, containing about $1,500,000 worth of proporty and prosldod ovor by about 800 hap py and prosperous people. Converge Near the Columbia. After swooping northward and southward lor 10 or 12 miles, thesa two stroams ara attracted toward each othor again, and after passing the stato lino, they unlto again and go to tho Columbia In union. In 1872 Judgo McArthur in a de cision fixed tho point of division for tho two streams and decreed that each, tho Tum-a-lum and tho Llttlo Walla Walla should bo apportioned one-half of tho natural flow of water coming down tho main Walla Walla rlvor, forovor after. Both branches' of tho river have boon 8ottlod up, tho streams havo boon dlvortcd and one of tho most prosperous comraunitlos in tho West hugs the bottoms and tributary lands of those strangoly separated rivers. Ono of tho old contentions of tho peoplo living on tho Tum-a-lum hai been that thoy woro being deprived of a portion of their rightful share of tho wator by two mill races dl vortod from tho Walla Walla beforo tho rlvor is divldod to form Its two branchos below. Thoso two racoB Bweop out southward through Mil ton, around tho point whoro tho wa ter Is divided equally for tho two stroams, and thon ompty tho undlvid. od waters thoy carry into tho Llttlo Walla Walla, a mile and a half below where tho Tum-a-lum ond Llttlo Wal la Walla divide, thus giving tho Lit tie Walla Walla peoplo tho advantage of tho Tum-a-lum peoplo to tho ox tont of tho amount of wator carried by tliosoVmlH races.. However ttys inequality In tho dl. vision of tho wator is offset in a no- fculfar way by naturo. Nature Tried to Strike a Balance. At a point about a mile and a half below tho divergence of tho two streams and below tho outlet of the two mill racos Into tho Llttlo Walla Walla, an ancient channel diverges, from tho Llttlo Walla Walla, and loads back through tho tract onclosed between tho two streams and carrioa tho overflow waters from tho IJttle Walla, Walla back into tho channo) of tho Tum-a-lum, thus effoctlng n Just division of the water, aftor the mill races empty back into tho Llttlo Walla Walla that portion pf tho un divided wator heodod to turn tho mill wheels. Tho Milton, Froowator & Hudson Bay Ditch company hne built a ditch dlvortlng from tho Littio Walla Walla below whero this old ojianhol leads from that stream back to tho Tum-a-lum and has fllod a olalm for C000 miner's Inohos of water an equal amount of tills to bo diverted from tho Tum-adum and Llttlo Walla Wal la, Tho 3000 inches to bo taken from tho Tum-a-lum is to be divorted at tho point of separation of tho two streams, and carried down tho natur al channel of tho Lltyo Walla Walla, to its head-gato, whero, with 3000 inches from that stream 1 would, be turned into tho ditch and used to ir rigate a largo tract of land not now sufficiently covered with ditches to produce crops. As a basis for Its claim for 000 inches of water this ditch company claims that this amount of water is now going to. waste in tho two FROM LAST TO FIRST People used to take plain cod liver oil for coughs, colds, throat and lung troubles after other remedies had failed. Scott's Emulsion is the modern idea of cod liver oil the first instead of the' last resort when such ailments appear. The taste of the oil is not apparent and the oil itself is partly digested makes it easy for the stomach. Scott's Emulsion is a, quick, reliable help at all ages. We'll tend you a umple free upon request. SCOIT & BOWNE, 409 Pearl Street, New York. 1 stroaniB and that it only claims un used wator. Scheme to Utilize Flood Water. Tho promoters of tho ditch desire to use tho overflow water of winter, when tho streams aro at tholr high est, for tho purpose of winter Irriga tion. The summor flow of the stream Is now entirely consumed In lrrlgat. ing the prosont area under them and tho now ditch company hopos to be ablo to produco crops with winter flooding. Tho Irrigation district of tho Llttlo Walla Walla was formed for tho pur pose of moro equitably distributing tho water of tho stream and brlngm. about a syttom Of Irrigation govorn mont for thoso residing on those streams and tlioro an) prospects of tho ponding suit being amicably setr tied by mutual agreomont among the Irrigators involved.
