An English Woman Says Men Would Marry Willingly Gives as a Reason That the Woman Will Not Consent t Marry At ore Men "A True Woman," In London Free Lance. ' It is Just what might have been ex pected from the modem man, this shifting of tho blame for the decline In marriages onto the shoulders of the womon. Man is piqued because ho feels lnstlnctlvoly that ho does not find favor with tho fair sex, and out of mere spite he turns up his lordly uose and says that ho docs not mar ry bocnuso women aro not good enough for him. He sets up n fanciful Ideal, which ho nevor for a mom'ont expects will bo realized, and says that ho wants that, .and will take care that ho gots It. Jf by any freak of nn- iture the abnormality which man up holds as the perfect woman wero to be found, she would never find favor with the average "lord of creation." for by then he would have decided that the extinct Dodo wai the proper mate for him. The whole Question Is summed up in tho fable of the fox and the grapos. Many would fly to our arms If wo would let him, but the natural instinct In him tellshlm that ho would be re jected, and, feeling sufficiently small as he Is, he does not dare to risk further humiliation. No; the "brave, strong man" Imitates the fox and tries to persuade his fellows that wearing a tall, In the shape of a wife and that, aftor all, is tho position ho wishes to assign to her, n mere decoration or appendage Is not fash ionable, nay, rathor cumbersomo At tho same time ho secretly onvlos thoso who .have boon graciously accepted by the "very nocossary woman." In his chagrin man accuses us, whom he Is dying to propose to, of being (ond of nmusoment, nnd ranks this partiality as a sin. Who is tho greatost patron of all forms of en tertainment I should like to know, man or woman? Do wo roqulre that one page at least of every dally pa per shall be filled with accounts of sports? Do we form half of the aud iences in muslo halls nnd theatres? Do wo lounge around In billiard sa loons or card rooms when we ought to bo earning our dally bread? Are we over hanrd to chuckle over "that awful spreo at Jinks?" Th accusation Is unjust, cowardly, but eminently manly. If we nre fond of occasionally call ing on some friends of our own seix and discussing with them the affairs of tho day, can we be blamed for wishing now -and again to mingle with people who treat us as equals nnd not as mere toys or Inferiors? For true appreciation we roust fly to our own sex. even though we are charged with gossiping. Nor should we be upbraid ed for desiring to become strong, sett ing that we are perpetually being sneered at as "the weaker sex." What is there. I ask, to make us feel Inclined to honor a man by mar- Jrylng him? From the moment he drat meets us he commences to troat us as If we were not endowed with reason; he talks to us as it foolish compliments were all that woman oould possibly desire; he airs his own greatness, with the natural result that he mnk us feel small, and he won ders that wo nre not in a hurry to accept this Inferior position for tho rost of our lives. Many a man talks far mare rationally to his pet terrier than he does to the lady ho takes in to dinner, albeit she may be far bet ter educated than he Is, and as no quaiHUnre tjpens hla conversation becomes more Insane, till, as hi ap proaches the stage when he fancies, be ought to aucswt marriage, kls ad utaUon become positively atckonlng. I do not say that a woman dislikes prate; no, she Is fond of It, but it must be sincere and eome from a man whom she can respect There I touch the two most necees vary characteristics Ih the man whom woman wants to marry; sincerity and the power to command rMpect Nat urally we dislike compHmeitts which we feel sure bare Ueea rehears! to barmaMs, or w-cUed or other wo men; whHe without reelect there can b m trwe love Lot a maa by Ma life show that be is pure, straightforward, and truly chivalrous, and his words will then TW "3L.TJCHBL7 Is often the name given by careless and ( thoughtless people to those who are enre- tul ana tnougiuiui.
