Tolle. a patient at tho stato Inaano asylum, committed buI cldo Saturday morning by setting flro to hor rJothlng. Ily somo means un known to tho asylum authorities slio had procured a box of matches. She secreted horsclf In tho llncn-room of tho uard It which sho was confined, and set flro to tho bottom of her dress, With a determination which would havo been almost Impossible to a per son of sano mind, sho endured tho pain without making tho slightest out cry. Tho first Intimation of what was going on was tho appcaranco of smoko through tho transom over tho uoor. Other patients gavo tho alarm, and whim Mrs. Tollo was found sho was so l badly burned that sho expired In a snort time. Mrs. Tollo was 31 years old, and wua committed to tho asylum from Marlon county a year ago. 8ho was known to ho of a suicidal disposition, and was confined In a ward where ex traordinary restraint Is oxorclned. Sev eral times boforo sho has attempted suicide, but tho efforts havo been frustrated by tho vlgllauco of tho at tendants. Coroner dough held an Inquest Saturday atcrnoon. Tho Jury ren dered a verdict In accordanco with tho facts stated above, and exonorat ed tho asylum authorities from all blamn In tho mattor. Superintendent Cnlbreath said that ho has hon un ablo to learn so that ho can say posi tively how tho patleut secured Jlio matches. It Is one of tho rules of tho Institution that matohos bo kept locked In attendant's room, and that no patient bo allowed In such rooms. Nature giving her best In honor of tho dead. Friday evening, and early Saturday morning, tliono having loved ones be gan to make their way to tho differ ent cemeteries with offerings of flow ers and floral decorations, and by noon Saturday tho cemeteries had been transformed Into beds of beau tiful flowers. Momorlal day originated as an oc casion on which a gratoful nation could honor her soldlur dead, but It has now become a memorial day for all who havo friends nnd loved ones In tho grent beyond. During the morning a largo num ber of people arrived front points out of town, nnd by noon tho cemeteries wero tilled with thoso doing honor to their dead. At 1 o'clock In tho nftornoon tho procession was formed In front of Tho Journal office, on Commercial street, with T. llolvorson as grand marshal and U I). Henry. It II. Lea- bo aud J. U Stockton, his aides, Tho procession was formed In the follow ing erder: Grand marshal and aides, Salem Military band, Company K, hourtn Regiment, Oregon National Guard; O. A. A largo arch had been erected In front of thu soldlors' burial ground, draped with evergreens nnd bunting, and at the top was n largo picture of Abraham Lincoln, whllo at the right aud left were pictures of Clinnt and Sherman. In tho evening tho Salem Military band gave a concert at tho corner of Court and Commercial streets, which drew a largo crowd of appreciative listeners. Immediately after supper tho O.
