H8ltMHaillt'atlll' (Chicago Tribune.) A comedy In four acta with a fifth tocomo, In which tho hedge hog Is tho leading motive, recently has boon en acted In Maine. It signally Illustrates Yanko calertncss and resources In an emergency. At tho last Bcsslon of tho legislature a bill was passed giving ft bounty of 25 cents a head upon all hedgehogs killed within tho sovoral towns. As soon as tho governor signed tho bill It stimulated tho In dustry of hedgehog destruction to such an extent that In ono town or dors were honored for tho slaying of 210 of tho animals. Thin was on April 24. Then somcono discovered that tho law was not operative until May 1. so that tho bounty on tho 210 was so much money thrown awny. and tho second act began. Tho town ctork asked tho parties to refund U10 money but thty refused, and this led up to tho third act. Tho astuto town clork hunted up a musty lnw which Imposes a'flno of IG for killing hedgehogs be tween October 1 and June 1. and, as this law Is operatlvo until tho now law goes Into effect, ho complained or tho men who had killed tho 210 htdgo- hogs and a local Justice fined them SB and costs for overy offense. Tho hunters did not reluh this trannctlon. Fir each 36 cents bounty they had received they had to pay a fine of $5 nnd t costs, so that for each hodge hog whose foropaws nnd noso had been brought In they woro 8.75 out of pockot This Is not tlio local idea oi a uar- gain, oven In hodgehogs. Furious ov er tho loss of their monoy. the hunt prn boaan looking tho laws over nnd found ono which providos tnnt any man who hnd any pnrt or a dead licdeohoc In his possesion botweon October 1 and Juno 1 was llablo to n flno of 5 nnd costs. Thero could no no doubt tho town clerk was llablo under this law, ns tlio noses nnd fore paws wore In his possession, bo fho clerk was haled boforo the Bamo Jus tlco nnd found guilty. Tho court flnod him 11.050 and added 102 as cost Tho fifth act In tho hedgehog comody will como off In tho hlghor courts, to which tho clork has roado appeal. As n buslnoss vonturo tho situation now stands ns follews: Tho town pnld I52.G0 for tho hodgohogs. nnd tho huntors pnld the town In linos and costs 11690. bo that It Is 91.848.C0 Ahead. The clerk Is out of pocket thus far 11.112. and perhaps moro bo foro ho gots through Tho 210 hedge hogs which have caused all tho fuss havo lost overythlng. Bo clork, town, peoplo and hedgehog havo all got In to trouble for lack of a llttlo logal carefulness, Indeed, In that particu lar town whore tho 20 bowod boforo tho majosty of tho law, troublos Just now nro ns thick and sharp as "quills upon tho fretful porcupine" News From Oakland.
