Tho heayy snow fall last week and tho wind afterward, almost completely destroyed the trail During the storm, however, sleds- were sent out by tho larger outfits to keep tho trail broken, and Tuesday many outfits began moving again, though the trail was anything but In good condition. The heavy snowfall extended far Into the Interior and down on Copper river and now there Is from four to six feet of snow where ten days ago thero was glare Ice. Late advices from Copper state Uint tho river Is overflowing In many places. Just what effect this will have on Copper. river and whnt condition of tho trail will be up that stream when tho out fits reach it Is hard to tell. Although there, are many partlos yet on this side of the divide, tho main camp of tho Nlzlna crowd Is about eight miles this side of Copper rivor. Thorc Is also a large camp JuRt beyond the summit. It Is ostimatod that there nrc between 400 and COO men In these two campx. A trip of only n few mllos out on tho trail will quickly demonstrate to the unltlatod that freighting to tho In terior In not what It Is crncktd up to he. The great depth of snow and the very narrow trail cnuses many tiim cultlos, and moro or less serious ac cidents. Every tlmo a horso sled Is met, the one returning empty must necessarily put his horso off Into the soft snow to lot the loaded ono puss. and each time a horse goes off the beaten trail ho goes out of Bight, so to speak. They cannot reach bottom so great la the dopth of the snow, and in most eaHOS they continue to struggle In their offorts to gft back on solid footing, llorsos hitched to loaded slods also frequently get off the trail. They plunge through the bo ft snow, probably overturning the sled and getting furthor from the trail with each uffort to. gain a footing. It may take an hour to again get thorn on the trail and ready to start, and In the moantlmo all those behind have J boon compolled to wait until the blockado is raised. This Is very try ing on tho horses. They not only cut I themselves with their sharp shoes. but become exhausted plunging in the soft snow. There has boon considerable trou ble with Hick horses on the trail, es pecially those, brought up this spring from Seattle. Many of them werh un loaded from the boat and started put on the trail almost Immediately. Tho Ku.Ul.-n rllmntlc changes caused them to catch cold, and many of them have the dlstempor.- A numbor of horsea have boon killed along the trail, some. of them with broken legs and others beiaiue they wero too sick to travel. There Is no small numbor of men pulling In their outfits by hand or with dogs. These people also have their share of trouble. The many "chuck holes" worn out by th horse sleds make traveling very difficult and slow. Quite a number of "cheecha- cos" are on tho trail this year, and they aro experiencing no end of trou ble. One party which started out this woek caused no little amusement. They had an extra large horse with two sleds and with the loads piled at least four feet high on each. The horse could barely pull the load on tho level and so often did they come to grief that they were halt a day get ting a mllo out of town. Among tho other things which thoy had aa "out fit" was a hoavy 6et of Iron bound tent polos, and a foundation on which to set a oampstovo, consisting of a platform of inch boards 3x4 feet with heavy wooden blocks for legs and n number of tin cans on top. Ry the tlmo thoy reaoh the diggings thoy will probably bo content to string their tent on a clothes line and set their stove on the ground. There are but few women on the trail at present, though quite a num ber expect to start In later. Yaldoz News. N The Excitement Not Over.
