News was rucalvcd In Salem today
of the strike of an Immensely rich
ledge In the Gold Creek mining dis
trict, on properties in which many Sa
lem people are interested. Tho strike
was mado on the east fork of Gold
creek and Cranston creek, about 15
miles from Gates, on claims that are
owned and controlled Uy the In
vestors Mining & Milling Company,
of this city.
The Initial strike was made several
days ago. when a ledge, that has since
proved to he a blind ledge, was discov
ered. The ledge was rich, and meas
ured IS Inches at the base, and ex
tended into the tunnel three feet. From
a superficial anamination it was be
lieved that the vein was nt least 50
feet In length. Today's roport, direct
from the mining camp, announces Uie
further discovery of a still lnrger and
richer ledge of almost pure copper.
Samples of the ore have been assayed
by a Denver. Colorado, company and
show values to the amount of $6fi.S6,
as rollews: Gold. ?4Z; sliver. IB. 16;
copper. $18.-10. The company's prop
erties are being very extensively de
veloped under the direction of Samuel
II. Burghardt, an experienced mining
man of Colorado. Mr. Hurghardt re
ports that the prospect is most en
couraging for profitable mining oper
ations in the Santiam country, the
prospecting to date showing great
richness in the mineral composition of
the lands
Eastern capitalists are making; In
quiry, and are prepared to furnish the
funds with which to install a flOA.OOn
plant at the mines In the spring, and
proceed with the active operation of
the property. Salem people who are
Interested In the project feel confi
dent that they have discovered valu
able property, and that, with the nec
essary machinery, mining on an ex
tensive scale can be profitably carried
on.
