The Man With Many Aliases and a
Fondness for Horses Escapes With
a Light Sentence.
J N Burroughs was tills morning
sentenced to serve one year In tne
state prison for the larceny of two
horses nnd a buggy, the property of W.
H. Goulet, a Woodburn liveryman. He
was taken to the ponltentlary this
forenoon. The prisoner was pleased
with tho sentence, which ho consid
ered a light one.
Burroughs is the young fellow with
half a dozen aliases that took a team
and buggy from the Woodburn livery
man to Portland, and was gone a num
ber of days before being located and
the team returned to Its owner. There
was some question as te the man's
guilt, and It Is believed he would have
bent the case had he fought IL He at
no time attempted to sell tho team, or
In any way dispose of It, and whon ar
rested claimed that he fully Intended
to return tho property. Aftor being
arrosted, however, there were a num
bor of requests from other sections for
tho dellvory of Burroughs on more se
rious charges, and It Is believed he
plended guilty to the charge of larcony
here to escape facing at this time a
nioro serious charge elsewhere. Had
tho fellow escaped a sentence hero at
tills time, the sheriff's offlco was In
communication with the military au
thorities at Vancouver, Wash., who
were anxious to hnvo Burroughs, alias
Mansfield, returned to that post, where
he Is wanted ns an escaped United
States prisoner, nnd also for the charge
of desertion.
