Xow the Salem correspondent of the Portland Telegram belittles the peti tions on file with (he Governor, show ing that 447 names are from Marion county on a heading printed by a Sa lem newspaper. He concludes that the petitions are "decidedly popwllsttc," and nearly all tbe "Social Democrats" are on the petitions. lie cheerfully adds, lest tbe petitions hare any weight whatever, that "very few business men or prominent citi zens anywhere have signed the docu ment." The Journal would like to publish the names of some of the signers of those petitions, and compare them with some of the opponents of the reforms aimed at but comparisons are odi ous. Hut enough of this dotractlon. The newspapors opposod to the special ses sion have now done their worst, and ought to feel thankful that in spite of their to-do the outlook for a special session Is brighter than ever. They might to feel grateful to The Journal that it has given them some thing to write about. The special ses sion has been the only live topic In the Oregon dally press for some tjme. Hut why belittle any man's petition? Hasn't a Populist. Socialist or Demo crat as good right to ask for a good thing as any other person, even though he don't wear the halo of an Oregon Republican? In the meantime we urge people to work for a special session to enact the great fundamental reforms demanded by the petitions on file with the gov ernor. WRONG WAY TO HELP A CHILD. In after years, must only add more sorrow and humiliation to Ills already darkened life. For the sake of outraged childish helplessness, if not for public decency.
