Lato Saturday evening a Saloni phy sician, whllo roturnlng from a profes sional visit to a patient, had an expe rience with an lnqulsltlvo local nows gatherer that ho did not exactly rollsh, by reason of the Inference that might bo deducted from tho rcportor'o ques tioning. Tho doctor observed that ho was being closoly scrutinized whllo on tho street car, and when ho loft tho car ho was not much surprised to seo tho other fellow, whom ho know by reputation to bo a reporter loavo tho car also. Tho professional man. paid not attention to tho fact, and contin ued on da way up street. Ho had gono but a few paces, howovor, until he was accosted In tho following terms: "Any thing now tonight, doctor?" to which the doctor replied ncgatlvoly, explain ing that there was nothing out of tho ordinary. Ho continued on'hls way, and was Bomowhat surprised to noto that his questlonor was following but a'fow paces behind. He had gono about a block further, when tho per sistent reporter Inquired again If tho doctor could not contribute n nows Item, and concluded tho quory by stat ing that ho thought probably a death had occurrod. By this tlmo tho patlonco of tho doctor, who did not havo ovon a speaking acquaintance with tho ques tioner, becamo exhausted, and, turn ing to tho reporter, ho said: "What In tho dovll do you tako mo for, anyway, an undortnker? This ended tho Inter view. Tho doctor did not appreciate tho assumption that a professional visit by him must bo attended by tho fatal consequences that the reporter had prosumed. tK.rr T-totftf:" mw ' Iu studying tho respective points oi tho beef and dairy animals as outlined It is best to commence) with tho head. There nro two types of beef heads ni shown namely, Hereford and Short horn, says farmers' bullotln No. 143,'ls ued by tho United States department of agriculture. Tho beef head should be short and compact, medium In slzo, refined in appearance, clean cut in con tour, broad, with wide forehead, indi cating a good supply of nervous force; tho eye large, clear and limpid; tho ear fine, active nnd covered with soft, silky hair; tho mouth largo; tho muz xlo medium in slze.'fiowy and free from coarseness; the Jaw medium heavy, well fleshed?, with a good opening be tween tho submaxillary spaco; tho poll rather broad and flat, and tho horns medium sized. Tho eyo is a very important factor In the makeup of any animal. It ro colvcs its nervo supply directly from the brain, and its clearness, brightness and slzo lndlcato the degreo of nervous en ergy and dlspoBltlou of the animal. An animal showing a largo amount of whlto around tho eye or with a small pupil and a suppressed eye is generally of a nervous, irrltablo temperament and is on this account a poor feeder. A broad and high forehead gives ample space for the housing of the brain, which, of course, directs and controls the nervous energy and influences di gestion, assimilation, circulation and other functions of the animal organiza tion. The nostril of tho beef animal should bo medium in size, with a clear, bright llulng membrane. If it is large, It in dicates u predisposition to scrofulous diseases and tho unnecessary oxidation and waste of food. If it'ls small, there is not sufficient room for the proper development of the air passages, nnd this Is un indlcutlon of hereditary wenkuiMuj Under such circumstances nuiugieni air win not uo arawir into iuo lungs to eoinploto tho oxidation of the food, which must proceed rapidly in the caso of animals consuming large quantities of 'roughness." As the chief function of cattle Is to consume large quantities of food for the formation of flosb, fat and milk it Is uecessary that tho mouth bo largo and the teeth firmly set. A medium sized horn, a refined ear and an Intelli gent, active appearance ijre all Indica tions of considerable Importance, ns they are ussoelated with good breeding, sufficient nrve enorgy. freedom from sluggishness uud gentleness of tllspost-tlon-all points of great importance to the cattle feeder. As ho knew no Inn gunges, ancient or modem, ho becamo clnsslcnl usher at a school In Brussels, with tho promlso of a commission In the Austrian army. Then ho was sud denly transferred to n clerkship In tho London oostolllce. He wns dlsqunlluea "Milk for Ixtbes hut meat for men." Wheu a man can no more eat a man's food, hut exists on it lit : IV: ami trucker diet he is gone Imck tu Wiliyhood. He mny he a big niiui hut he has n Ixihy's stomach, i Success in life letemls largely on the stomach. The man with the kthy's stomuch finds himself also with a baby's peevishness and perversity. He has the baby's exaggerated personal sensitive neH and jeulousy. He is an annoyance to his friends and an anxiety to his family. No man can be stronger than his htoumch. A weak stomach argues a weak man. And a "weak" stomach is the common starting point of most of the so-called " weaknesses" which affect the great organs heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, etc. How can it be otherwise when the lxxly and all its organs are dependent on the stomach for their nutrition? The "weak" .stoninch dregs the organs down with it, because being weak it is tumble to convert food into nutrition, and the organs of the body being starved, of necessity become weak, ns a consequence of starvation. Dr. Pierce's ('.olden Medical Discovery cures di sea mis of the stomach and other organs of digestion and nutrition. It makes the weak body strong iu the only way physical strength can be made, which is by food, projerly digested and assimilated. The cure of "weak " lungs, "weak " heart, "wcuk " ur sluggish liver, "weak" kidneys, etc., which lollow the use of "(folik-ii Medical Discovery," are all due to this perd-ei nutrition of the bod, the woof of whu-h is the remark- able in of sound, solid llesh, whicli invariably matks the cure. A vaguo threat thnt he mu5t i"s nn examination was forgotten before it was put Into execu tion, and Trollope characteristically takes occasion to denounce the system of couipetltlvo examination by which ho would havo been excluded. Mean while ho was turned loose In London nnd attempted to live like a gentlomnn on 00 n year. The results are Indlcut cd by a couplo of anecdotes. A money lender once advanced him -1. for which, first and last, ho paid '-'00. This person, ho says, became so much attached to him ns to pay a dally visit to his olllco and exhort him to bo punctual. "These visits were very tor rlblo and can hardly havo been of serv ice to mo In the olllco." This mild re mark applies also to tibialis from tho mother of a young woman In tho coun try who had fallon In lovo with him and to whom he "lacked tho pluck to glvo a decided negative." Tho mother used to appear with a basket on her arm and nn Imtnonso bonnet upon her head and Inquire In a loud voice be foro all his companions. "Anthony Trollope, whon nro you going to marry my daughter?" No wonder thnt ho wns miserable. He wns hopelessly in debt nnd often unable to pay for n dinner. Ho hated his work, he says, and he hated his Idleness: he quarreled with his supe riors, who thuught him hopelessly in capable and felt that he was sinking "to the lowest pits." At last ho heard of n place In the Irish postolllco which verybody cesplsed and was successful n applying for it, because his umstors were glad to get rid of him. At tho same time they informed ills new supe rior that lie would probably hnvo to be dismissed on the tlrst opportunity. Nutlonnl Hcvlow.
