The exact date that the struc ture will we opened again, however, depends entirely on the promptness with which the remainder of the build ing materials that will be required to complete the contract le delivered. It has now been five weeks since the work was begun, and the eoMtrartors says the contract would have been en tirely illerhanted a week ago bad the matetiala been delivered a they were needed. The delay, which seems to have beeu unavoidable si ace the mill from which the bridge lumber was contracted was destroyed by ire short ly nfter the work was beano, has worked a hardship on the tMstneas community of this city. It may be im possible to complete the work by Fri day, but in that erent It will surely be finished so that the brldae may be opened on neat Monday. As the work under contract has pro greaeed, the great need of the exten sive repairs, that are being made, has been dleckieed. The weet approach of the structure was In a most danger out condition. The supiiorUBg piers at either end of the span that joins the steel structure on the west, were found to be entirely rotted at their base, and the danger of a collapse of the span most probable at any time In fact the span at either end had set tled fnlly six Inches hetow the adjoin Ink parts of the bridge. To make the subetitutlon of new plem was a diffi cult undertaking, and Involved the erection of a scaffolding that supports either end of the heary span, while the decayed Hilars are removed and the new pillars are placed In position. This part of the work 1mm been very alow and tedious. In the meantime the ferry that Is be ing operated across the river is doing an enormous business.
