M.Vt
It la Uic ritrht of every chiia

parents it mutst look for

How incon
ceivably great
is the parents'
responsibility, and bow important that
no taint of dieac is left in the blood
is to transmitted to the helpless child, entailing the most
nitiablc eulferincr, and marking ita little body with offen
sive sores and eruptions, catarrh of ihc nose and throat, weak cyca, glandular
swellings, brittle bones, white swelling and deformity.
How can parents look upon such little sufferers and not reproach
themselves for bringing Bo much misery into the world ? If you have
any disease lurking in your Byatejn. how can you expect well developed,
healthy children ? Cleanse your own blood and build up your health, and
you have not only enlarged your capacity for the enjoyment of the pleasures
of life, but have discharged a duty all parents owe to posterity, and made
mankind healthier and happier.
There is no remedy that so surely reaches decp-scatcd, stubborn blood
troubles as 8. 8. S. Jt searches out even Hereditary
poisons, and removes every taint from the blood,
and builds up the general health. If weaklings
are growing up around you, right the wrong by
nutunsr them on a course of S. 8. S. at once. It is
& purely vegetable medicine, harmless hi its effects, and can be taken
by both old and young without fear of any bad results.
Write us about your case, and let our physicians advise and help you.
Tliis will cost you nothing, and we will also send our book on blood and
Skin diseases. THE .SWIFT SV&CIVIC CO.. Atlanta, C.

CREATINQ MORE DIQ RESERVES,
The farce of sottltiK apart six thou
sand uiIIoh of forest reserve In Ore
gon is announced without further com
ment from Washington.
Geological surveys, Irrigation
schemes, wagon road hind grants, lieu
laud scholium and railroad land grant
frauds all lurk behind the forest re
servo Hwludlo.
It Is today the great breeding ground
of civil service olllclnllsm where tho
overproduction of cottage gradtiatM
In worked off on tho people for life
Jobs.
In Oregon one corporation hits taken
100.000 aeros of tho pmipln's finest
timber hinds under the guise or for
cot reserve legislation.
The forest reserves uro an Kiiropenu
Invention, a mild iiiimo for a game pre
serve on which to multiply nlllclallsm,
with which the land Is swarming In
every direction.
Like the lice and frogs (led sent as
a plague on tho HgyptluiiH, the multi
plication of ofllelallsm goes on.
What la worse, the public lauds are
stolen and sequestered from the thou
sands who used homes, and who would
protect the forest against fires.
The lCiiropenulaatlou of America
will not oease until the country Is on
tho verge of n iHilltlen) revolution If
not over the verge.
Oregon Is sowing the seed that will
result In n bloody harvest all over this
nation some day.
Tlioro is a difference of opinion bo
tween Suporlntondent J. D. Lee nnd
First Warden J. T. Janes, of the stato
penitentiary, as to the torms of settle
ment that should be adopted In adjust
ing the claim of Mrs, Mary Waggoner,
of Chehalls, Wash., for the return to
the Oregon officials of the body of tho
convict, Merrill. In fact the dlfferonoo
of opinion Is of the most pronounced
nature. Huporlntondont Leo has gone
on rocord as being opposed to the
payment of the reward, or any part
thereof In oxcoss of the sum of (300
for tho reimbursement of Mrs. Wag
goner for her actual expenses. On tho
contrary, Warden Janes takes tho po
sition that the entire reward of fl600
should bo (laid to Mrs. Waggoner with
out furthor controversy.
In discussing the subject with n
Journal representative, Warden Jnnos
said: "Since there Is not doubt
but that tho recovered romalns Is tho
body of Merrill there should not be
the slightest hesitation on the part of
the state In the prompt paymont to
Mrs. Waggoner of tho entlro amount
named In tho reward. Tho state can
not afford to bo niggardly In this mat
ter, because of tho unpleasant reputa
lion It will receive, In fact has nl
ready received throughout the conn
try In relation to Its trontmont of tho
criminal class, Tho effect on the dls
eipnnu oi urn peniienunry mat re
sulted In the return to the Institution
and the burial of the remains of one
of the escaped dosporadooe has In
Itself been worth moro than tho
amount of the reward. There Is a sec
ond and even greater reason why tho
reward should bo paid Mrs. Waggon
er the failure of the state of Oregon
to promptly and liberally reward the
return of Merrill's body tins discour
aged tunny who have been pursuing
Tracy, and the result Is that largo
numbers have entirely abandoned the
smirch for the remaining bandit, since
the hope of adequate reward tins been
largely removed by the state's tardy
action In the consideration of the
claim presented for the return of Mor
rill's body. Honco, for two distinct
reasons, I think Mrs. Waggonor Is on
titled to the full reward. First, bo-
cause she returned Merrill's body, nnd
because of tho beneficial effect result
ing In tho general dlsclplluo of the In
stitution; secondly, for tho reason that
by Its action In tho matter the state
Is retarding the search for Tracy. I do
not wish to he understood as particu
larly criticising tho Judgment of my
superiors, hut at tho same time I have
my own opinion, and I do not hestltate
to express myself In the matter."

to get a gun as quickly as ho could do
so and get into action with it. Mr,
Janes' statement, togethor with othor
circumstances, would indicate that at
the penitentiary at Salem there must
be something back of the whole Mer
rill and Tracy escape that tho officials
at the prison do not care to have como
out. The query arises, "Is the gover
nor of Oregon In on the deal?"
While It will not be denlod that
there Is serious need of reform In the
management of the Oregon state pon
Itcntlary, still the above editorial doos
an Injustice to both Governor Oeor
and Warden Janes. Tho action of
Warden Janes, on the morning of tho
escape of Tracy and Merrill, needs no
defence. The foregoing was wrltton
without n knowledge of tho facts In tho
case. Those conversant with tho ac
tual conditions on that morning know
that Warden Jnnos was on tho grounds
promptly, and personally directed the
guarding of tho othor prisoners, nnd
probably provontod a wholesalo deliv
ery, since for a few minutes following
the sensation oscnpo of tho two con
victs and tho killing of tho three
guards, the walls of the onclosuro wore
very poorly guarded, and In fact there
was nothing to provent mnny of the
men from going also..
