had any knowledge of the burial of the
money on the premises. Did not know
the Hamsby boys.
McMahon condiKted the ciOHa-exum-Inatlon
of .Mrs. Kwing, nnd brought out
the fact that Kwlng hud, prior to his
death, given I'urdy's father $2000. but
wltnoMH stated that did not prejudice
her against her groat-nephew.
Mrs. Kwlng testified that alio her
self burled the money, nil of It 38dO.
The money, y.mw in amount, was
taken out of the Woodburn bank In
1001. It hud been given me about two
mouths hoforo, when I burled It. Mr.
Kwlng wiih aged 81 ut the time, nnd
was sick, but not so 111 but what he
knew what he was doing. I'urdy hnd
been to house after monoy hnd been
burled. Do not know that Mr. Kw
lng ever told I'urdy where tho monoy
was, or that I'urdy knew thnt any
money wiim hurled there. At the time
Kwlng Knve me the money It had been
burled, he having transferred Its pos
session to me. Husband left no wil
Last time I'urdy wna on plnce to my
knowledge was about three months be
fore husband died.

but the convict Tracy Is still In the
vicinity of Seattle, and that his cap
ture will yet be accomplished he firmly
believe. Sheilff Cudlhee, of Seattle,
and the olllcom of Tucoma nro of the
same mind, nnd Mr. .Innes reports
that a quiet and systematic search Is
being made for tho murderer. Dosldea
a large number of men who are guard
ing the mountains on either side of the
supposed hiding plnce of Trncy, a
number of detectives are working on
tlie case.
It was repotted ut tho time Mr.
Junes left Salem, when bin destination
was not known to other than the pris
on ofllclals, that he had been called to
some point In Washington for the
purpose or Identifying Home person
that had been placed tinder arrest for
Tracy, or that another dead body had
been found thnt also required his ser
vices for Identification purposes. Hut

dation. It Is learned that Mr. Janes
was called to Seattle for consultation
with the officers that are prominently
continuing the senrch for the fugitive

the past six or seven years, and doing
much good work among the In

today, looking up his old friends. Mr.
Orne la well known In this city and
stnte. He formerly held pastorate In

ten year ago he wont to Syracuse. N

as two wagons. In the time he hns vis
ited 12 states and territories.

of the good which he has accom

gon, petdtentlary the week before Tra
cy made his escape. Of him Mr Orne
says. "Following my address to the
prisoners I waa accorded the privilege
of going among them, mid I met Tra
cy, and hail a talk with him. He was
a nice looking fellow, quiet In demean

ilo. and I am confident that the spirit
of bravado which be has shown in his
light for liberty was put ou after ho
left the Institution.
