There is very little news, except we had an excitement over an escaped convict who has had things his own way and cannot be coaxed to go back to prison. We called out the militia of Oregon and we could not coax him im He then went over to Washington and feels better over there. He orders his meals cooked by persons he selects and he impresses every one in his service that he desires, fiom a span of horses to a gaso line boat. Ae is headed fcr Victoiia B, C, where he expects to impress into his service one of the British Aten-of-war. He will then go on a tour around the world. We also had a Fourth of July celebration. Everything went well except our Goddess wheel from her wagon.) The her through the procession and proud ol the event, and so were all the spectators. We had good music fro'm ihe Reformed Indians, Mjnmouth and the Sahm Hayseed Military band and we had plenty of peanuts and Ihe dogs and monkeys enjoyed themselves seeing Ihe Tice Sisters dance and hearing the darkies walk for a cake. POTATO PATCH ADVISED A Salem Woman Wants Prac' tical School Work Editor Jeurnnl: As n patron of the Snlom schools, I hopo some good may como from having hired a city super intendent, nnd would llko to suggest something that ho could turn his wnsto tlmo to. I rofor to the condition of tho school grounds at our respective school houses. Thoy aro a disgrace in most instances, but I boliovo this could bo remedied, and tho grounds mndo- vory attractive, and that with out any oxponBo. Tho superintendent could plan to improve tho grounds, and on flxed days have Bomo of the older pupils come with tools and say spend half a day each week to fixing things up. Thoy could levol up or grade beds for shrubs of llowors, nnd plant thorn without nny oxponso to anybody, nnd I would havo my boys nnd girls lonru how to do something of that kind than to loam somo of tho monkoy-shlncs that aro taught In 301110 school books. This would broak tho monotony of tho routluo work, and in spire tho young folks to tnko n prldo in their surrouudlngB nnd to do some thing thnt would not only ho n practi cal education to thorn, but prove n dlioct bonoflt to ovory taxpayer. A respectable potato patch would prove a thing of beauty compared with some of our school ynrds, and It wouldn't hurt some of tho scholars to learn how to tend a potato patch. Why not appoint one afternoon a wcok Muring good weather for such work, and havo all tho principals and teachers join in on nn Intelligent plan to do some thing for the school grounds? This wouldn't cost anything, nnd might provo a healthful diversion for till concorned. A WOMAN VOTER.
