Marion and Linn County Have
Received Bids
Structure Will Replace the
One Blown Down in 1901

Commissioners D. C. Swann and II. II.
Sprcnger, constituting the Linn coun
ty court, came to Salem thla morn
ing. At 1 o'clock this afternoon the
gentlemen met In Joint session with
the Marlon county court und opened
bids for the construction of a part
nership 175-foot Hpan Howe truss
bridge across the Santlnm river at
Gates.
Five bids were submitted. The
proposals were of a compound nnturo,
consisting of an offer for the construc
tion of the 171-foot span, the entire
structure to be covered and painted,
and a hid por lineal foot for tho con
struction of nn approach, the length
of which hns not yot been decided by
the courts. Tho bids were:
C. A. Orny, Snlom, bridge $3939; ap
proach $1.10 per foot.
J. II. Tollotson, Albany, bridge
$1301; approach $1.19 per foot.
C. F. Royal & Son, Salem, bridge.
$1175; approach $1.55 per foot.
W. II. Mullhollon, CorvnlllB, brldgo
$1500; approach $1.55 por foot.
J. F. Conn, Albany, brldgo ?I5C0;
approach $1.05.
The contract was uwarded to Mr.
Gray of this city.
The new bridge is to replnco the
one that was washed out lu the spring
of 1901, nt a loss to the taxpayers of
about $1000. Unreasonable though It
may appear In Orcgon, It Is nn nctual
fact that the old structure was blown
from Its foundations Into the rlvor,
when the stream wns high, and the
structure wna completely demolished
aud washed away.
The Marlon and Polk county courts
will hold a joint meeting Snturday
afternoon, when bids will be oponod
for the construction of a new wost np
pioarh to the "Willamette river steol
bridge at Salem.
May Not Be Re-Built Except
By Legislative Act

the legislature has convened, since a

the lire. The Insurance money, which
was settled upon by stipulation, will
be wld the state onie time this
month, or before the tlilry days fol
lowing the ilutM the stipulation was
subscribed to shall have elapsed.

The public la hereby notified that
the big steel bridge across the Wil
lamette river, at Salem, Is soon to be
repaired. The approaches and rail
lugs are out or repair, aud all parties
are warned not to crowd on the brldg
during the display or fireworks on the
river on the Fourth of July, as there
is danger of an accident.

to Mrs. Mollle Perry, which was sol
emnized Wednesday, recalls an expe
rience In tho mntrlmonlal career that
Is seldom met with. This la the fourth
time that Mr. Olllett has taken the
marriage vows. This alono Is nothing
out of tho ordinary, but tlireo of his
marriages wore to tho same woman.
More than 21 years ngo he married the
first tlmo, and he and hlB wife lived
together ror nearly II years.
One day she left him and went
home to her mother. A divorce wns
sued for and granted. They got to
gether ngaln, made up and romarrled.
Separation came again, nnd Mr. and
Mrs. Glllett woro married three diff
erent times, and the Bnmo number of
times tho obliging Umatilla county
court granted n divorce. She was the
complainant twice and ho once.
When they agreed and made up to
get married the last time another wo
man hnd crossed the path of Mr. Gll
lett. This wns none other than tho
bride lu tho Inst wedding. Mr. Glllett
mnde love to her, and when he and his
former wlfo wcro married tho third
tlmo this Mrs. Perry sued Mr. Glllett
for damages for gaining her nffee
tlons and giving her tho "go by." ThlB
suit was compromised, and after Mr.
and Mrs. Glllett hnd lived together for
a few months nnd wcro divorced tho
last tlmo, Mr. Glllett nnd Mrs. Perry
met, cooed nnd mndo up Just as soon
as the six months, required by the
laws of the state bofore a divorced
man or woman can marry again, wns
up, they came to town, secured a mar
rlugc llcciiso and were made man and
wire.
Now the acquaintances or Mr. Gll
