NAnaii. PS1WPE SEWER WORK It is Said. Will Be Completed in August The construction of tho state sower is bolng hurried to nn early comple tion. C. A. Gray, who has tho con tract, says tho ditch will bo finished onrly In August. Fred A. Erlxson has charge of tho construction force. About CO day laborers aro employed on the Job, twenty of whom are con victs. Tho excavation of tho sowor has now progrossod beyond Twenty-first Btrcot whoro tho workmon have Just com pleted the deepest cut nnd oncouu torod tliGjnosl water of any place on tho Job. The ditch, whoro tho mon aro now working, by reason of tho high altltudo of that section of the city, has been sunk to a dopth of about 7 feet. From 80 to 100 feet of tho sowor Is completed dally. The sewer Is constructed of brick, is ogg shaped, bolng 30 Inches dcop and 20 Inches wide. Tho most difficult part of tho Job has been accomplished, since tho routo for tho bnlancc of the canal to be constructed is over a low section of tho suburbs, where but lit tle excavation will bo required, and tlie construction work fiom now on will be carried on with groat rapidity. Tho digging of tho cannl has clearly detuonstinted an alarming fact, i. e.: Salem woll water contains much of contagion, and its use imperils good health. This may bo considered- a startling Btntomcnt, but It is nn abso lute fact. One year ago, whon tho ditch was being oxtondod through the residonce district, wells for a consld ciablo distance in either direction wero drninod of their contonts. This shows that tho soil is porous, and that impurltlos must collect in tho wolls, which can only bo a sourco of consid erable contagion, nnd tho direct cause for a good sharo of tho sickness in the community. Tho natural conditions under which tho water supply collects In those wells, nnd tho fact that it re mains stagnant until drawn out, makes the aqua doubly harmful. Theso same conditions have not boon dis closed In the subuibnu districts, since It has not boon necessary to sink tho ditch so dcop as was required in the down-town sections. This is a strong argument for hydrant water, and sug gests municipal ownership of tho ser vice that tho bonedts thoroof might ho economically onjoyed by all. Tho piospects nro so favorable that a company of Eastern capitalists havo bogun boring for the fuel. ' In most oases people become engaged as the result of pro pinquity ratlier than because of any deep rooicu prcierence. And so it often happens that' the wife enters upon the obligations of maternity just as thoughtlessly ns she entered on the marriage relation, because no one hns warned her of the dangers she faces.
